That looks like it’s still sealed in cellophane!

It is.

I’m quite happy to fight you over this. My MZR-90 that still works (and records on the move) vs my broken iPod Classic says otherwise.

He said it was still sealed in the post!

@I_LIKE_CATS - that is grim how they’ve stretched the cover like that although I guess they did that for the cassette too. I’d forgotten how much they had to mess with cover art for tapes actually.

I clearly missed this reply. I was joking about the Smart Watch. They’re so much money for fuck all use. My ‘What?’ was meant to imply I didn’t know why everyone was looking at me strangely…

Yeah there isn’t a good option for remotes for smartphones that I’ve seen.

Oh, so he did.

Yeah, recording was a real niche for MD - I had a player that could do that back in the day (didn’t use it for anything serious but it was fun). MP3/media players nowadays are missing a trick!

But there’s no denying that MP3/digital whatever has MD beat for convenience (you get far more music on the thing). And you can write tags on MP3s with a computer - a keyboard! - rather than scrolling through all the letters with the MD remote. That was the worst thing about it in retrospect aaaargh

I had no idea they were around in 92. Crikey.

It was something to do in a few period at school

Free periods at school were always meant for studying* back in my day. The place went to rack and ruin after I left.

I watched the whole video. Happy birthday me.

His voice is incredibly annoying, but it was quite interesting. Thanks, I guess.

It will come up in your YouTube recommendations now and you will lose hours going down the rabbit hole of videos on obscure formats. He is really good though, and pretty funny when he uses puppets to mock YouTube commenters, also like that whenever he pulls out his cassettes it’s always 80s hip hop which I wouldn’t expect for a nerdy middle aged northerner

:slightly_smiling_face: Could tell this was a description of techmoan before checking. Have watched a fair few of his videos where he covers old formats, but not the minidisc one. Will check it out later.

As someone quite heavily invested in tapes at the time, I was rooting for DCC (with its backward compatibility) to take hold rather than minidisc. Was allegedly better quality than minidisc and supposedly more popular in western Europe, briefly, apparently… but then died and was killed off in '96.

Ended up buying a minidisc player quite late in the game, but was never really sold on it as a format. Went straight from tapes to MP3.

Had a lovely little Sony NW-E55 thing…

…the size of a matchbox, but had to flash the firmware to allow drag and drop of mp3s. Otherwise it was essentially unuseable cos it required you to use the hateful SonicStage software to convert all your mp3s to the Atrac format, as used on… minidiscs.
