the filth threads show up in the newsletter because they are among the most popular threads, right?

so they probably would be best for bringing folk in idk

Not really, aside from GDPR related things which probably were updated via another way which I don’t actually remember because I did so many all at once

GDPR was kind of a big deal though?

No offence taken lovely. I feel that we should all be mindful that anyone could read our posts and that in theory, they could be shared elsewhere if they’re less dull than most of mine. However we do have the ability to stop stuff going in the newsletter, so it seems fair enough to use that option where people might be happy to share stuff publicly but not to have it given algorithmically generated extra publicity that it would never otherwise get

Term 3 states that all content generated by you is licensed under Creative Commons, so while it doesn’t explicitly say your info will be used to x, y and z, it allows for anyone to do anything with your posts.

Please note the site owner has specifically said that they don’t want the newsletter to stop

That’s going to be the theory of the algorithm.

Again, I don’t really care either way and if it makes everyone more comfortable in terms of NSFW stuff then sure, but also I didn’t know if Sean’s DiS newsletter is actually different from the forum round up from Discord?

This is the loophole that Maosm used to steel hotbeeftrauma’s Internet fame

Imagine if it turned out Shaan was signed up to the newsletter!

Oh absolutely. But from a user perspective it’s as easy as ticking a box, and certain things are exempt from GDPR anyway - if it’s to do with site use, orders, updates etc. More about what has been done in the back end which likely Discord will have handled

No idea but we aren’t a specifically filth message board (except on thursdays) so as @anon24576931 has also said, maybe the users who would check out the social board because they saw a post talking about blowjobs would necessarily be the ones we want!

I think it’s generated by Discourse, there’s no editorial in it or anything (assuming we’re talking about the digest email, there is no actual “newsletter” afaik). It’s send via drownedinsound@discoursemail.com

Yeah, that’s what I thought, so we’re all talking about two different newsletters? Really excellent

One going to users to entice them back (the ones referenced in op)

One that goes to people signed up to DiS.com which is the articles etc

sean has a newsletter called the unhappy hour, which is separate from the discord forum roundup

Doesn’t mention emails

Or algorithmic curation

It’s one thing to be at a legal minimum threshold in t&cs, it’s quite another to explain the mechanics of what that might mean in real life to users & admins in real life scenarios

I think this thread shows that there’s a grey zone here and that we have as a community self-generated an opt-out in the form of #SSP categorisation would appear to show that there is concern over the mechanism’s practical applications

Well, yes. This thread’s only been talking about it at an ethical level until you mentioned the ToS.

Maybe the real newsletter is the friends we made along the way

I’m in a careful what you wish for mode here because I can’t see any reason for the site owner to keep the site going if it becomes a hassle.

Looking at the T&C’s there’s nothing stopping discourse publishing SSP threads I don’t think?

It’s just a workaround the mods have set up for the digest
