A bunch of John Lanchester novels are 99p today: The Wall, Capital, Fragrant Harbour, Mr Phillips and Family Romance. Any recommendations for someone new to his work?
Overlapping with the coffee wanker threadā¦
99p today.
For the Nintendo nerds⦠99p at the moment, only came out recently.
I bought the new Julian Barnes book as a daily deal today.
Iāve resisted any other April purchases so far. I actually reduced my backlog of unread books last month, which is generally unheard of for me.
Oooh was looking at this the other day - itās a very nice physical book too!
this is a very good book (Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith)
Itās a bit pricey at Ā£3.89 but Iāve grabbed it anyway as I enjoyed vols I and II. Which is clearly the cue for it to be reduced to 99p very soon!
Continuing my RJB 99p purchases without reading any. Hope I end up liking him!
Iāve just started the second book of this trilogy. Enjoyed the first and the second seems to just be picking up roughly from where it finished.
I went to pick up this third one to find Iād already got it a few months ago!
Iām 42% of the way through the 1st one of that series. Enjoying it. Not as compelling as the other series but still goodā¦
this sounds interesting

What if Chernobyl was just the beginning?
The acclaimed winner of the Baillie Gifford Prize returns to Chernobyl to tell the gripping story of thirty-five days of war
On 24 February 2022, the first day of Russiaās full-scale invasion of Ukraine, armoured vehicles approached the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine. It was the most direct way for them to reach the capital - and an extraordinarily reckless plan after the disaster that had taken place there three decades earlier. Russian occupation of the plant had begun. It would last thirty-five days.
Closely reported and narrated from multiple perspectives, this is the story of the Ukrainians who were held hostage and worked shifts for weeks instead of days to spare the world a new nuclear accident. We meet Valentyn Heiko, the foreman who had also been there for the clean-up of the Chernobyl accident in 1986 and turned sixty during the occupation; plant workers who found a way to celebrate International Womenās Day despite all odds; Russian officers who had no knowledge of nuclear reactors; and four stalkers who were caught in the middle and stood in for the overworked cook.
Gripping and unforgettable, Chernobyl Roulette sounds the alarm about the dangers of nuclear sites in an unprecedented time, when plant workers are left to fight on their own while the world holds its breath. In a book that reads like a thriller, Serhii Plokhy tells a remarkable story about human nature, uncertainty and courage.
I had bought two Donal Ryan books already, but never read, and saw a third one on deal. It prompted me to read one of the books and I really liked it, so Iāve now bought this one too:
Book four of the Stormlight Archives is 99p today
Must grab this. Think this was the first book of his I was aware of but never bought/read it, but noticed last time I was looking at the blurb of it that the main characters in this book are also side characters in one I have read (The Queen of Dirt Island)
One by the author of Hamnet
Have also heard this is good
Donāt know much about this one but I like the cover
When the Cranes Fly South is a lovely book. Really good.
If you want to put yourself through it, this is pretty amazing - Blood Meridian: a brutal historical Western novel from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author (Picador Collection) eBook : McCarthy, Cormac, Meyer, Philipp: Amazon.co.uk: Kindle Store
Might have to buy this because I lent my paper copy to a friend and never got it back
Currently reading this - mainly as it was a 99p deal.
Really enjoying it but not one to read at night
Two £1.99 books, and one £1.99 one.
The Jan Carson one is less than 100 pages - Iāve had it on my wishlist for a while, so will get it at that price.
The other two were on my wishlist, but canāt remember why. Have bought the second one, although I got the third one as an audiobook a few months ago (as yet I listened) so wonāt splash out the 99p cash for the ebook version just yet.
