I quite enjoyed the re-interpretation of the source material. Since he only appeared in a few numbers I think it would actually be better if Corgan didnât sing at all, he sounded terrible compared with the opera singers, in that style. Would be a different story with electric guitar in hand.
Think they could lean in more and go full-on operetta with it, spin a more overt narrative. The visuals they had were a bit screensaver, make it more of a âsetâ for the soloists. All in all, worth the experiment.
(Cringed my face off when everyone started ovating before the quiet coda section of âTonight, Tonightâ. Terrible phone behaviour throughout. Am now in favour of yondr pouches at everything)

Mac Demarco at the barrowlands.
Really fucking enjoyed this, first time seeing him and wasnât sure what to expect live but heâs a brilliant performer and seemed to be having a blast. Band were great and good mix between super chilled numbers and more upbeat/dancing numbers.

Went to see Lily Seabird last night. Weirdly I had it in my head that last yearâs Trash Mountain album (which I quite liked) was primarily a hushed and solo record, but listening to it again this morning that wasnât really the case.
But anyway, with that mistake in mind Iâd been fairly surprised to hear the singles from the new album (our Friday) being a lot louder. The live show amps that up even further and goes in a real Big Thief / Crazy Horse ragged jams direction. She can really play, but she can also lead the others - half the band is from the UK so I assume they only had limited rehearsal time, and one song they hadnât practised at all, and they just nailed it throughout.
It was a ride and I had a fantastic time.
Plus the blue light makes the photos all look really cool.

Locked Shut / Grove Street @ Papillon Southampton
A sold out hardcore triple bill in an old converted church in town opened by Not Without Punishment who were young and energetic. Grove Street are from Southampton and play excellent thrashy metallic hardcore. Heaps of energy, loads of stage divers, very fun.
Locked Shut were locked shit.

Ex Metz singer brings his indie power rock band to Glasgow. First gig on the tour and it was a cracker!
Support was from the weirdly named Foot And Leg Clinic, who werenât great at all!

Allah-Las w/ Lael Neale - Ulster Sports Club, Belfast
Tueday night. Used to bounce off Allah-Las a bit when I tried them but I got a second hand vinyl copy of Calico Review for a good price in one of my local record shops a couple of years ago and always found it solid, and I enjoyed digging into their back catalogue a bit more in the run up to this gig. With their new album being completely instrumental I wasnât sure how theyâd approach it live, but as it turned out they only played 2 or 3 songs from the new one and it was more of a greatest hits set, didnât recognise every track but they seemed to play a lot from the first album in particular (they did they say they were playing lots of old stuff as theyâd never played here before but I canât imagine them going too heavy on the instrumental stuff elsewhere either).
Lovely guitar tones, good fun, enjoyed the vocal swapping as everyone except the keyboard player got a turn on lead vocals (I donât think heâs an official member). Some funny onstage chat between them as well, particularly about the massive amount of fog from the smoke machine when they first took to the stage, as well as jokingly trying to start a Belfast/Dublin rivalry. Tell Me Whatâs On Your Mind with a big long instrumental intro was a good opener (unless the instrumental part was a different track, not sure) and the closing one two of Could Be You and Catamaran was great.
Lael Neale supporting - I was strongly considering coming to this gig anyway but her being added to the bill sold it to me. She played a headline show round the corner in McHughs about a year and a half ago but I missed it as it clashed with King Creosote so was good to have another opportunity. Would have liked a longer set though, the 30 minutes / 6 songs went by far too quickly, almost felt like it could have been a co-headline tour. Iâm not making it to any of the Psych Fests across the water but this felt like getting a miniature slice of it.
Played her new single and a good mix of tracks from the last few albums. She has a quality where I donât actually listen to her that much but a lot of her melodies are so memorable that the songs sound instantly familiar once I hear the start (I get the same with the first Katy J Pearson album actually). Love the omnichord and I enjoyed them swaying side by side in sync during I Am The River. I hadnât noticed the guitarist was playing a right handed guitar left handed until she played the same guitar right handed for two songs.
Had no idea how many people would be at this gig, I was getting a lot of instagram ads for it but heard no one mention and have never really heard anyone talk about Allah-Las around here, felt like the comedown from a busy gig week and with CMAT doing the second of two big sold out shows across the road I thought this might be pretty empty but was surprised to find quite a big crowd as soon as I walked in, there were even a couple of people dancing at the front throughout Allah-Las set. I wish the venue had anticipated the turnout a bit better and put on more bar staff though as the bar was unbelievably slow between acts, really should have nipped downstairs for a drink instead.

I only got an instagram ad the night before the gig. Didnât see anything else about it anywhere, thought it was a bit strange. Is it a new promoter?
The promoter is on Eventbrite as âSCEâ but I donât actually know who it is. Theyâve been doing gigs for a while now I think, and Iâve followed their Eventbrite page so I get emails when they add a gig, but I donât know what their social media is, if they even have it

PRML SCRM - BRRWLND BLLRM, GLSGW
At this stage of proceedings Iâm really only going to see Primal Scream if theyâre either playing somewhere extremely local and a mate has a spare, Kevin Shields has rejoined them or theyâre playing XTRMNTR in full, and one out of three was the case last night.
Itâs a formative album for me, hit at the right age and spun my musical taste off in different directions. They played it well I thought, I always thought it had a really strong opening four tracks (although I think the album front-to-back stands up well still), but last night it was the closing section that hit hardest. Insect Royalty onwards was the kind of sonic stuff I wanted from the evening. Theyâve got a second guitarist Iâm not familiar with, and I think Phil Mossman is still on bass (he was wearing a hat though which makes it impossible to tell).
The Chemical Brothers mix of Swastika Eyes is inferior on record but was superior last night - no repeat of the visuals that caused all the drama last year in London, but still a lot of footage of the wreckage of Gaza, Trump and Netanyahu as the backdrop, ending with a message that our government is complicit in genocide.
They played the MBV Arkestra live too - Iâm not 100% sure, but it was my understanding that they just played the recording and a video at last yearâs gig. It was a pretty solid attempt too, taking into account the fact that youâre never really matching the record version for intensity without drafting in the full Kevin Shields Effects Pedal Experience. The couple of horn players added a lot to that and Blood Money.
Minor spoilers for the encore if anyone is going to any of the other nights on the tour, although you probably know exactly what youâre getting - the half-dozen usual greatest hits, plus the one surprise inclusion of Iâm 5 Years Ahead of My Time, which was great.
Merchwise theyâve got a vinyl of last yearâs XTRMNTR gig which I hadnât known anything about the release of, and the usual MTHR FCKR t-shirts if you want to bring out your inner AJ Soprano.

Glad this was decent! Donât know much of their stuff but considered going to their Cardiff show last night as not much seems to be coming through town of late. It was a little on the pricey side so I passed but kinda regretting that a bit now..
I think Belfast was ÂŁ25 which made me hesitate on buying a ticket, until Lael Neale was added to the bill and it seemed more worth the money
Same price for here too to be fair but I wasnât familiar with Lael Neale either so probably should have done some homework / research

Bayonne @ Hackney Oslo, London
Saw Bayonne three times in 2017 and once in 2019, but not since then. I was tempted to skip this sold out gig, especially as I felt utterly drained yesterday evening, but went along as my partner was really keen. Arrived maybe 5-10 minutes after he presumably started playing at 20:30, and it was pretty great to see him again. Lovely sound and nice to hear him singing to his tunes - laptop with some keyboard and he also did some bonus standing up drumming too, in addition to a drummer he had with him. The new album didnât grab my attention yesterday, but I liked the songs live, so will listen again. Was really nice to hear him play Appeals again, what a song.
