Ladytron at Heaven

I think a few DiS-ers went tonight.

Very glad I bought a ticket. Only got a ticket last week and re-listened to their last album after originally thinking it was only average; it’s amongst one of their best.

Loved the gig. For once I went relatively up towards the front for me. The sound was loud and pretty good. That was once of the best times that I’ve seen them. Probably the best was at The ICA maybe 15 years ago. Great gig.

Georgia at Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff. Great performance, full of energy and someone pls hook those basslines up to my veins. Ended on a cover of Running Up That Hill. Left the place grinning like a cheshire cat.

Supergrass at O2 Academy Birmingham. Pretty much perfect.

Monday night’s gig, Ladytron with Stealing Sheep at Heaven…

Saw this same double bill November before last at The Roundhouse and it was a lot of fun. This time was even better.

Would happily have Stealing Sheep for every support slot tbh tbf - they are extremely entertaining. Three part harmonies, synchronised dance moves, costume changes, audience participation - not a trace of just going through the motions.

The ^outfits got rather True Faith at the end :+1:

In terms of live performances (rather than DJ slots) I think I’ve seen Ladytron more than anyone else (this was either number 12 or 13). They are always good live, but previously their live sound has not always matched up to their recorded equivalent. No worries this evening - they sounded absolutely brilliant. Setlist was heavy on the most recent album (although no Until The Fire which surprised me), with a scattering across the rest of their back catalogue.

Think this was probably the best time I’ve ever seen them. Special shout out to the visuals which made every song a photo opportunity - I managed to put a filter on everything which makes my shots look like some kind of smudgy expressionism

Alfa Mist @ EartH Theatre
I was wondering while watching the support act if he would have any guest vocallists on the night. “Tom Misch? Nah, he’s probably too big a name now. Jordan Rakei? Doubtful.” And then lo and behold, Jordan Rakei (pictured) pops up from the front and sings on the final three songs during the encore!

A set that took a while to warm up (not helped by being so uncomfortable due to the “seating”) and for the band to find their groove but once they did, it was brilliant. The material off of Structuralism was fantastic - one of my favourite albums of last year that I think DiS has slept on. The only minor negative point was Kaya Thomas-Dyke (who also played bass) only singing on one track - her voice is absolutely glorious.

Last night’s gig, Sheep On Drugs at Paper Dress Vintage…

Always lots of fun. Some songs off most recent album, Does Dark Matter, plus a bunch of the hits (Motorbike in particular sounded great).

New venue for me - I understand it is a vintage clothes shop during the day. Does a good job for a hundred person or so venue. Kevin Eldon was in attendance for the support band. Could have done with finishing a bit earlier than 11:30 tbh tbf - some of us have babysitters to get back to…

Alcest with Birds in row

I’d never heard Birds before and I’m still not sure what kind of music they play? Punk maybe? It was really atonal and aggressive but by the end of the set they became more melodic and won me over. They were really sweet as well. I heard someone say they sounded like Glassjaw but I have no idea. :man_shrugging:

Alcest have remembered they’re a metal band and arrived to rock the fuck out. Most of the set was taken from the last 2 albums, which was fine by me, but it was really full on, pure Black metal in places. Great stuff. :metal:

I’m seeing them tomorrow night. Was hoping for a bit of Ecailles, but knew it was a long shot.

I don’t know that old stuff very well but there was definitely some in there, the guy beside me nearly started crying he was so excited by the encore songs.
I’m pretty sure he was on a lot of MDMA

Lianne La Havas @ Moth Club
What. A. Voice. I remember hearing the live version of Au Cinéma years ago and being absolutely spellbound by it but didn’t really initially warm to the debut album as I didn’t feel it fully played to her strengths, but her last album Blood may well be one of my favourites of the last decade. I’ve been dying to hear material from that record as I was working abroad when it came out and it went down a treat. Not much from the new album other than Bittersweet (one of the best vocal performances I’ve ever heard) and another new one which was nice enough. The sub-headliner Rachel Chinouriri was good but I’d like to hear her with a full band before making a proper judgement.

Birds In Row are probably my favourite band I’ve ‘discovered’ in the last couple of years, absolutely blistering and melodic at the same time. GBOL.

give We Already Lost The World a listen

Jon Hopkins at the Sage, Gateshead

I grabbed a last-minute ticket as a couple of friends were going…feel silly I didn’t jump on this, must have forgotten how much I enjoy his music. It was wonderful to see both sides of his work, the beautiful piano arrangements in the concert hall were beautiful…and then when it morphed into those banging Immunity beats it was incredible. It was odd for a while sitting listening to the big bangers, but someone brave stood up and got everyone to follow and it went up another notch with everyone cheering the drops and…ahh it was really cool. Anyone going to see him on this Polarity tour is in for a treat! Nice bonus when he played the first song off the King Creosote collab, my fave project of his!

Also, I didn’t know Hayden Thorpe was supporting until the day before so that was great too. His voice has just got better with time, and he played my fave Wild Beasts song in Palace, and even a cover of Tim Buckley for good measure.

Good night

Holy Fuck @ Dingwalls…

Opening event of the 6Music Festival. Would have liked to catch Pongo and Ghum as support, but got dealyed and missed both :rage: Fortunately Holy Fuck made up for it. They were great - new stuff in particular sounded amazing live. Always enjoy Dingwalls as a venue, and there was a lot of energy in the crowd for an extremely wet Thursday night :+1:

^Pic taken from the surface of the sun apparently…

Nada Surf - Sala Moon Valencia. We didn’t travel to Valencia to watch Nada Surf, they were playing while we were here. I don’t really know any Nada Surf but know a few people who really like them. They were ok - had some good songs but not enough to make me go and check out the back catalogue.

Every time one of the hits got played the crowd got quieter as everyone got their phones out to video it - You can see quite a few in the photo below:

Also watched the Trail if Dead in Bristol this week, they were great.

Fuck! I didn’t know this was on :frowning:

It was originally going to be Girl Band, but they pulled out just before the tickets went on sale. Weirdly this Thursday night didn’t get anywhere near the same level of advertising as the other nights of the festival :woman_shrugging:

Bangin’ beats, cool visuals and lots of beardos

Really great show, topped off by ending the setlist with ‘Come Together’ in tribute to Andy Weatherall. Beautiful.
