The Silver Field supported by Clementine March

The Silver Field have a new album out in June. I thought their last one was good, but nothing too engaging but they were interesting enough to see live. Glad I did; they were great. A sort of folk-trance-electronica type of sound. Really liked it. Will revisit the album again. Definitely worth a look into.

Hadn’t heard Clementine March before tonight. I loved her first song and last song. I missed the rest of the set as I’d left my bag at a restaurant before the gig and only realised one song in and had to go and get it back. Anyway, she sounds exactly like Stereolab. No bad thing.

Overall an excellent double bill for £7.

Jpegmafia at Earth

Had a really great time. Spent most of it at the front and it was extremely sweaty, fairly intense. The setup felt like a bit of a missed opportunity; there was a screen at the back with what seemed like decent visuals, but I doubt anyone in the venue could get a good look at them. More strobe would have been nice too. But the music! Strong setlist (started with Forgive Me Jesus!), well paced, went quick. And Peggy himself:

The Hold Steady @ Electric Ballroom…

Not particularly familiar with their stuff, but a couple of mates were going so I tagged along. Was a lot of fun tbh tbf. Big singsong choruses, hands in the air stuff :raised_hands:

They played loads of songs and were still done by 10pm, which I approve of :+1:

So yes, four gigs in five nights this week - like I’m @BMS1 or something…

Ben Watt and Keeley Forsyth at Portland Arms

Second gig in a row where the support was very contrasting from the main act, Keeley Forsyth was really good, just her accompanied by an organ, bit over theatrical but the music was excellent. Ben Watt was very enjoyable with Rex Horan on double bass and didn’t catch the drummer’s name but a tight trio, a good way to spend a Friday night.

Sudan Archives at Dingwalls.

Total magic, only played for 30 mins but she was completely hypnotic.

Pillow Queens at the Good Mixer

Went straight from Dingwalls to this and it was great fun. Has no idea the Mixer had bands, crammed into the corner of the pub. I love Pillow Queens and it was a pleasure to see them in such lively surroundings.

Jehnny Beth at Peckham Audio

9/10 gig. Been here once before and I didn’t get my previous spot of the ledge at the back where I can rest my pint. Conversely ended up front row and centre tonight. Very rare for an old man like me.

I first saw/heard of her when she was part of John and Jehn. Saw them at (the best venue ever) The Luminaire probably mid/late 00s before she formed Savages. John was on guitar tonight too.

Savages debut album is good but it never quite clicked with me. I remember they sold out The Electric Ballroom before the album was released. Saw them live around the time of the debut at The Lexington. Great gig though. Their second album for me was the realization of their talent, attitude and anger. Loved that album and their gigs at The Roundhouse and Brixton Academy.

Anyway, tonight I’d only heard the two tracks that she’s released. Excellent songs. The other new ones she played tonight sounded very strong and she performed them obviously in the same brilliant style as Savages. The first song she played, Heroine is a hell of a track. Judging solely from the first listen of the songs live it could well be a hell of an album she’ll release in a few months. I’ll get a second listen tomorrow at her set as part of the BBC 6 Music Festival.

Tonight, as with The Roundhouse and Brixton gigs where I saw her she stage dived. I have the very slight badge of honour of her stepping on my shoulder to take some/most of her weight as she propelled herself into the crowd this evening.

Please allow my boldness of posting several photos. I took quite a few good ones. These are a variety of them.

But, whoa, that was such a great fucking gig. Loved every minute of it.

Did you stick around for Junior Brother by any chance? Think he was on the same bill anyway.

Sisters of Mercy and A.A. Williams at The Albert Hall, Manchester.

After missing her support slot with Cult of Luna, I was really looking forward to seeing A.A. Williams. She didn’t disappoint. Sparse gothic folk tunes, and a beautifully spectral voice. Incredible.

Sisters of Mercy we’re just brilliant. Almost hypnotically so. It was tricky to get a decent shot, though, given the ridiculous amount of dry ice.

Special shout out to the venue, which is stunning.

Sisters in Bristol tonight is sold out, and I haven’t been able to blag any guest lists or get anything off Twickets. Gutted and annoyed that I left it too long. How’s the new guitarist / new songs?

Went to Alcest on Friday, pretty much echo what @UncleRetrospective had to say upthread. Just these great monumental washes of sound all over you, alternatively beautiful and vicious. Birds In Row were very good as well, recommended for fans of Metz etc

The two new songs were very good - as was the new guitarist. His backing vocals were particularly strong.

cheers, I’ll be looking out for recordings of the gigs so I can add them to the imaginary fourth album I’ve been compiling over the years. Quite exciting to think that with five new songs in the last six months or so we’re the closest we’ve been to a new album since 1990! Not going to happen though, is it.

BBC6 Music Festival at The Roundhouse

A hell of a line up.

I saw Nadine Shah two weeks ago and she was as brilliant as her Moth Club gig. Her new album has the potential to be huge. I do hope so. Steve Lamacq introduced her on stage and it seems I was at the same gig he was at many years ago when he saw her at The Bull and Gate. Loved Nadine Shah at The Moth Club and also tonight.

Jehnny Beth stole the show today. She did a “Jesus Lizard” into the crowd and it worked perfectly. This weekend has been a Jehnny Beth Weekend for me and I’m very glad for it. Instead of gushing too much I’ll opt for saying that the set was a killer and like Nadine Shah, her album should be a stunner. One of the smartest and talented artists around at the moment. With a stage presence unmatched.

I liked Anna Meredith’s Varmints album and her new one FIBS. Never seen her before. The musical arrangement live was as impressive as was the ability of the musicians on stage. Worked really well. She’s damn talented. I’ll be slammed for saying so but shame that she accepted an MBE. I’ve never liked those awards. Still, doesn’t detract from her talent and great set tonight.

Kim Gordon rocked. Really like her album. Kicked any stuff that Thurston has out to touch. I saw her for the first time around 25 years ago not so far away at The Forum. She was just as stunning live tonight. The 66 year old out rocked any artist a third her age. I knew big songs like Airbnb would be performed live well but wasn’t sure how the more drone-y tracks would be. They were done just as well.

The plan of my evening was to listen to two Kate Tempest songs and leave for pub pints nearby and get a takeaway. I’d seen her live a few times at Rough Trade East and also at The Roundhouse before. I liked them but I didn’t want to hang around at the venue for longer than I needed too. “Unfortunately” she was instantly engaging and performed a great set to thankfully ruin my plans and I ended up seeing her whole set. It was a lovely way to end the weekend.

Great night out. Nadine Shah and Jehnny Beth seem to have brilliant albums in the making soon to be released. Anna Meredith has a talent that’s hard to put your finger on but she’s pretty great. Kim Gordon is an indie icon pure and simple. And Kate Tempest has a talent that puts smiles on tired faces like mine tonight.

Glad to hear that Kate Tempest is killing it. Saw her here in Brooklyn months ago and felt like it fell flat. Not sure much of it makes sense outside of the UK.

You’d recommend Kim Gordon then? She’s here in the summer and need to decide on tickets

The Hold Steady @ London Bush Hall. THERE IS SO. MUCH. JOY.

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead @ The Dome

Amazing performance last night by the veteran alt-rockers! Was an energetic set packed full of classics over their past 10 albums. Crowd were really lively and up for it too. Had an absolute blast! Also great support by Alex Henry Foster!

Yeah, what you said. Impressed they’ve found touring band members versatile enough to fill different parts on different songs.

Only criticism is the amount of strobing in AHF made it impossible to look at the stage at times. Think I still have spots in my eyes 24 hours on!

Oh yeah absolutely agree with the stobing for AHF, had to look away from the stage at times to protect my eyes, was far too bright!

Just read this thread title and laughed out loud on the train because it made me think of Chabuddy G’s pronunciation of etiquette in the last series of People Just Do Nothing.
