LastAstronaut's Thread of 100 Tunes

Ok, I may regret this but now a bit of time has passed since I finished my 100 album thread and the site migration is complete, who fancies another big list thread?

Taking a cue from MNP I’m going to do a thread of 100 favourite tunes. Unlike the album thread these won’t be ranked, it’s just too difficult and leads to sleepless nights and quandaries of do I prefer this tune to that tune? Should this track be higher or lower in the list? Etc etc.

The only rules I’ve set myself are one tune per artist and to try and avoid any tracks that appear on any of the albums in my 100 list. As they’re not being ranked I plan to post them in random order (although I might save a couple of my absolute faves for the end), or in fact whatever order they are on the spreadsheet. There will be some metal, dance, electronica, shoegaze, post rock, post punk, post metal, a little bit of pop, a soupçon of prog, and a couple of cover versions.

We’ll start with a bit of a DiS favourite from 2007

1. of Montreal - The Past Is A Grotesque Animal

Quite enjoyed this band’s output for a couple of albums but this epic 12 minute track from 2007’s Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer is an absolute stand out. Can’t say I listen to their stuff anymore but always have time for this tune.

2. XTC - Making Plans For Nigel (1979)

Another song that whisks me back in time to being a kid watching Top of the Pops.

3. ISIS - Garden of Light (2006)

Coming back to the 21st century with the closing track of ISIS’s 2006 album In The Absence of Truth. Although the album doesn’t quite come up to the standards of Oceanic or Panopticon, this track is one of their best. The drums on it, ooft!

4. The Notwist - Pick Up The Phone (2002)

A lovely little gem of a tune (nice animated video too) from the German indie band that MTV2 played pretty often and got under my skin.

5. Maybeshewill - Critical Distance (2011)

Speaking of good animated videos…

Edit: Hmm, I remember that video being better than that, ah well, great tune anyway!

Here’s another terrible version.

6. Adam & The Ants - Stand and Deliver (1981)

Kings of the Wild Frontier was one of the first albums I ever bought aged 12, it very nearly made my 100 albums but as MNP had already posted about it it got edged out. But I can still remember the physical, Christmas morning excitement that 13 year old me felt when I heard the opening horn and hoofbeats to this first single from their following album (the follow up single Prince Charming didn’t hit the same heights for young LA so this was pretty much the closing point in my brief Ant obsession!)

Yikes. I didn’t know this existed, I wish I still didn’t!

7. Planet Perfecto - Bullet In The Gun (Saturday Mix) (1999)

Time to throw some shapes!

8. Dub War - Spiritual Warfare (1994)

Well that’s annoying, the track I wanted to include was Mad Zone but I can’t find a version on youtube or anywhere, so this will have to be second choice off the same album. Loved this album of reggae tinged metal from Newport, South Wales of all places. Caught them in a tent at Reading '95 in the middle of the day but they still got the whole place jumping!

9. Godflesh - Angel Domain (1996)

Confession time, I’m not a huge fan of Godflesh, I’m afraid I find a fair bit of it quite boring, sorry. But this track absolutely slays.

10. A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran (So Far Away) (1982)

Nostalgia from two periods for this track. One from when it came out in my teenage years and a slightly more recent memory of playing GTA Vice City on the PC, razzing around the map on a motorbike for hours, doing wheelies and stoppies, not doing any missions just listening to the radio stations while getting my motorbike skill to the top!

11. Lard - Forkboy (1990)

I think I first heard this side project of Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) and Al Jourgensen (Ministry, Revolting Cocks etc) when this track appeared on the soundtrack to Oliver Stone’s 1994 film Natural Born Killers. Furious tune!

Such a great album.

12. Meshuggah - Bleed (2008)

Let’s finish today’s posts with something a bit on the heavy side :metal:

13. Department S - Is Vic There? (1980)

This one hit wonder was included by @midnightpunk in his list of tunes and rightly so, it was and is a cracker. I was 12 years old and this just flicked a lot of switches in my head, so much so I drew their logo on my school rough book. High praise indeed!
