was about £9k ish all in for lessons etc. Think that amounted to approx 50hours fly time which is the bare minimum i seem to recall.
Question: for those who have a bit of flying experience, how much more than the average Joe do you think you fantasise about taking over and landing the plane when the pilots get serious food poisoning, to a hero’s welcome every time you go in a commercial plane?
This made me feel great about the world https://www.pprune.org/private-flying/290328-carbon-emissions-light-aircraft.html
@guntrip I was also an air cadet! Can confirm it was very good, did flying, gliding, rode in a helicopter, loads of hiking, camping, shooting. I was in the marching band as well, which meant I got to get away from some of the extra marching
cheers, think we’ve got the broad idea now, I can go back to periodically thinking about it every 2 years and then forgetting again.
Top tip for annoying a helicopter pilot: strenuously refuse to believe that helicopters can glide.
i was in the band, played the trumpet but never had a decent trumpet. i ended up with the instructor’s old one that someone had bashed a mouthpiece so hard into that the welding broke. still got it somewhere, no mouthpiece tho
might post it in the gear wankers thread later. bashed up trumpet sans mouthpiece, well nu folk
You are a member of the band Beirut and I claim my $20
Apparently it’s quite common to buy a share in a plane. One of my dad’s mates quarter owns one with three others. As long as it’s not in heavy rotation it seems to work out well - he mostly uses it for day trips to Cornwall and France
Join the RAF then quit after you’ve been given your first Plane Driving License. They’ll actually PAY YOU to learn to fly a plane (assuming you don’t get killed in a war before then).
do i have to get a haircut
I don’t know, but you probably do have to wear a big pair of goggles and a scarf.
Blimey, planes are much more than I expected.
Thought you’d get a wee Cessna 150 second hand for about 10 grand. 40 years old and it’s still £23k!

yeah pricey, although i wonder if i could put it through the company?!
I was given a trial lesson as a gift once (this was back when I was a Flight Simulator nerd). It was good fun. Took off from Southampton Airport, flew over the Isle of Wight and the Solent, got to have a go at flying it quite a bit. They don’t let you touch the controls when you’re anywhere near the ground though.
oh my god
I don’t know where I heard / read this, but apparently it is a mantra well known among the very wealthy: “If it floats or flies, rent don’t buy”.
Might buy Flight Simulator 2020, which is essentially the same thing.
It’s ‘As Real As It Gets’
Wait they don’t use that branding anymore. Still
