I really like the thread idea, going to enjoy having a proper listen through in a bit.
I think the melody on the chorus is a bit of a stunner. Love its defiance and and on this version those chilly, sad little guitar parts. I’d not seen The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas or heard Dolly’s take before hearing this, that’s great too.

This song dates back to the 15th century. A pregnant Mary asks Joseph to pluck her a cherry from the tree, Joseph petulantly replies ‘Let him pluck thee a cherry that brought thee with child". Unimpressed by this, Jesus, in the womb, asks the tallest cherry tree to bend low and it does, placing a cherry right in Mary’s palm. The thing I really love about Shirleys version is her sister Dollys arrangement, you won’t be thanked for putting it on a festive playlist but I find it super haunting.
