Let's have a chat about sleeping bags

Any outdoorsy types want to share some of their experiences about sleeping bags, dos and don’ts, best tips for buying a new one, etc?

Yes, I am in the market for a new sleeping bag, thanks for asking

I’m currently looking at this one (long version as I’m 6ft tall):

But haven’t really used a sleeping bag much since my long gone girlscout days, so I’m feeling very clueless. I’m a side sleeper with wide hips so this looks good and I can get one for £150.

I find a bag with a cotton/jersey/flannel inner lining so much cosier than the ones with shiny polyester or similar.

Don’t hold off on getting out to use the toilet it is not an appropriate substitute

I was looking at this super nice wool-stuffed, silk and linen lined number but obviously the price was somewhat higher than my budget.

I reckon if you’re driving and have the space, it’s worth considering a cosy rectangular fleecey one over a polyester mummy sleeping bag so you can sleep better and stay warmer. I have a single version of something like this (although mine is 20 years old)

My brother-in-law who is very outdoorsy has taken a similar one when we’ve been camping before so I felt like my choice was validated by that.

However if you’re short on space or you’re carrying it with you on a (not freezing cold winter) trip, I’d probably go for a decent 2-3 season mummy bag along with a cheap sleeping bag liner. My mummy bag probably cost about £50 15 years ago and I use a £6 liner with it and it was fine on a chilly night in May a couple of years ago

Yeah, I’m not a fan of the mummy ones – used one a couple of times a few years ago and felt very restricted. But I am definitely thinking of getting a nice liner or even two, one for winter and one for summer! Seen some very nice looking merino wool ones about for colder weather. I don’t see myself camping out in heavy blizzards or anything, but I do live in the north of Norway so…

Got a soft spot from the brand Snugpak as had a really warm one when I was kid/teen. Dunno if they’re still good

Still got (and using) my mid-90s Ajungilak, from before they moved production to China and the quality dropped.

Liners are a must, imho, as they’re so much easier to clean after use.

Also self-inflating roll mats that pack down to a tiny size are brilliant things these days - well worth getting too.

i need a sleeping bag that’s not mummy style but will still pack down enough so i can carry it on my bike
