Previous place I lived, flat on the top two floors of a six storey block, discovered quite quickly after moving in had both cockroaches and bed bugs. Yay. Got the council pest control round and they said that it’s virtually impossible to actually get rid of either out of blocks, you just have to make it easier for them to go elsewhere in the building. Some hard core cleaning, steaming and chemical warfare and neither ever came back.

Have had a few mice over the years in current place. Nothing major fortunately. Next door neighbour had bees make a hive in his loft a couple of years back - paid someone to destroy the hive, which I think might be illegal.

Flat I lived in in Sydney had endless giant flying cockroaches and fairly regular visits from huntsman spiders…

we had bees at my parents house once - built a nest in the loft and started getting into the house etc

A science teacher at the local school was an amateur bee enthusiast - he came round with all his gear and took them to a farm or something

Got really scared when behind the microwave found a load of insect egg looking things, looked on top in the cupboard with the boiler in, thousands of the things, thought a biblical plague was going to take over the flat turned out to be cavity insulation beads

My wife had an infestation of fleas thanks to her dog being a mucky prick and them forgetting his flea treatment (three of them between them thought the other person had done it).

That was fucking grim.

The exterminator guy was about to gas them or whatever and was saying “This is the really tough part of the job” and my friend was all “Yeah, yeah - bet it’s really sad. Now please get the fucking things out of my house”

This thread has put the fear into me. Rats and mice can do one. Goes back to when I was a child and I put my hand in a hole in a wall to retrieve a tennis ball and I pulled out a dead mouse. My fingers in its rotting carcass.

Fleas when I first rescued the cat but as a pretty quick fix (although did have to do a second round after they reappeared about 3 months later - only a few and got rid of them sharpish though, permanently.

Other than that the things I get the most of are spiders. Hardly in infestation though, and they stop flies etc anyway so I try and keep the odd one around until B notices them and makes me get rid.

One of the highlights of every summer in my house is dealing with ant infestations. We have a routine down now but the first summer we had them was properly grim. My housemate and I had accidentally broken a hole into a cavity wall in the winter when moving appliances and we thought nothing of it.

Cut to July and the kitchen is swarming with ants. No idea where they were coming from until one day I had a brainwave and pulled out the fridge. Thousands of ants behind the fridge and kitchen units. Pushed the fridge back in, went to our local DIY store and spent big on ant spray. Got masks and disposable overalls, threw on some Black Flag and got to work along with my housemate fucking the bastards up. A satisfying but horrible job.

Had a bit of trouble with them in summer 2017 but we’re old hands at it now. The hole still isn’t sealed but the landlord is doing work next month and he’ll be fixing it, meaning that the problem will be over!

Yep, we’ve only ever seen one mouse in the house and it was when I spotted Toccata killing it. Good kitty.

Where I grew up, we used to have loads of voles (similar to field mice) in the surrounding fields, which proved great sport for our cats. One of the cats decided to start storing them in the shoes which we kept in our back porch, meaning that if you forgot to check your shoes before putting them on you were liable to thrust your foot straight into a rotting vole. One wintertime I pulled on my snowboots, having probably not worn them for the previous 9 months, and felt some fairly serious resistance. Turning my boot upside down saw about 15 desicated vole carcasses come tumbling out. Proper Indiana Jones film type stuff. Thanks Sooty, you feline killing machine :+1:
