this thread started out ages ago as a way to talk about the state of the economy

it then got side tracked in Jan when a few people got in to the gameshop/dogecoin thing

I would like to go back to talking about the wider economic problems as it’s slowly going to become more and more relevant (and also cos I haven’t made any crypto or stonks investments myself so no gains to brag about)

I agree with the issues raised, and I apologise if I’ve made anyone uncomfortable. For what it’s worth, I’m poor as fuck and I threw in on something as a tiny gamble to try to make my own situation easier. Frankly, I also got a bit tired of my whole experience of ‘the markets’ side of the economy being sitting on my tiny pile of nothing watching rich people get richer. I don’t speak for anyone else’s experience but my own. I understand if that makes people consider me a hypocrite or whatever, because in fairness I am. I’m not saying anyone else is a hypocrite by the way, just speaking to my own situation. I have my personal opinions on crypto and investing (generally that it’s mostly smoke and mirrors and damaging) but I don’t judge anyone else for trying to drag some kind of compensation out of this shitty world. We all make our decisions in awareness of the context, hopefully, and we all make our peace as we must.

Separate thread would be a good idea in my opinion, the focus has absolutely drifted and I acknowledge my role in that. There is a discussion to be had around crypto.

In fairness I don’t think it’s particularly turned into the official DiS hedge fund thread, but it’s probably reasonable to hive off the various bitcoin things into another thread, or just change the title on this one and start a new “Stock Markets in general (no investment chat)” thread.

Nah this is terrible logic. There’s nothing ‘uncourageous’ about someone choosing to voice their opinion in a thread in a general sense without needing to reply directly to whoever it is they are talking about. Turning it into a criticism of acorn is just weird.

This is the sort of thing where it can cause trouble for people when they come in looking for discussion of what’s going on in the economy and get a face full of investment chat. It’s better to keep things separated so people know what’s going on, not so people can hide and avoid judgement or whatever, but to avoid situations that lead to discomfort for everyone. There are moral and ethical issues with investing that are legit to call out. People also have their own agency and will make the decisions that they are comfortable with and suit them.
