I guess Death Wish already existed. I mean there is more bad in Taken due to its firm positioning of the bad guys as Arab foreigners who wish to rape white women but my recollection of John Wick is that most of the bad guys are Russian or eastern European and being pummelled by a guy who’s seeking revenge for the death of his dog.

Punisher in Daredevil S2 is pretty much playing on the same stuff and that show general has a lot of American guys fighting criminals who, erm, happen to actually be foreign-born.

It’s basically only slightly tweaking a very standard formula so I’m not surprised it might get away with it.

Pretty sure Neeson at some point did say he was uncomfortable with having done the Taken films. I’m sure it was US parents coming up to him and saying stuff like, “Oh thanks to your film we made sure our kids didn’t travel to Europe!” although clearly it’s hard to understand how he wouldn’t have expected that reaction.

I’m not trying to score indie points here but I’ve genuinely not seen Taken. However I do remember my dad telling me after he’d seen it that he couldn’t quite believe what he was watching, that it was a completely unveiled white male power fantasy of a guy murdering scores of anonymous foreigners who were all presented by the film as bad and wanting only to kidnap and rape white women.

As above, I’ve not actually seen the film, but if that’s an accurate assessment of it, then it’s pretty fucking galling that he’d go off and make that film if he recognises and supposedly regrets the horrible tendancies it’s appealing to.

holly valance from neighbours is in it playing herself too, hes her security at the beginning and then at the end she does a private gig for him or something (this is all true, its such a weird, shit film)
