To clarify: I was referring to Titles with the Word Fountain, which was recorded in the same sessions as TFCF and I had assumed at the time it came out they were outtakes, but realised today was considered a “proper” album.

I thought it was just an addendum as well, never even bothered listening to it as a result

I thought TFCF was great, didn’t have particularly high hopes for it as a solo album but there’s loads of great tracks on it.

Seems weird to continue the band when it’s just Angus

Yeah, I agree with this. I know that the interview stuff at the time was focused on the narrative that “It was pretty much a solo project all the time everyone, the other two just gave me confidence to make the music I did”, but it was the three of them for so long. Not a rotating cast of session musicians, but three individuals who were dedicated to this project full time.

I mean, I don’t know how true or false it is, but the fact that this point hadn’t been emphasised before and suddenly fit in very well with the narrative that it was always kind of a solo project at… the point it became one, just feels a bit like rewriting history for the sake of keeping the name.

Kind of weird that even Pitchfork didn’t review Titles from the Word Fountain (it’s not even on ADM or Metacritic!)

i listened to it quite a lot cos i reviewed it i think and quite liked most of it but tbh i’ve never really listened to it since

i remember really liking Cred Woes and No Tree No Branch though

Maintain that Drums Not Dead is one of the greatest albums of the 2000s. Felt a real game changer album in terms of concept and sound.

Haven’t listened to them/him since Mess though. Now it’s a solo project I’ve somehwat lost interest.

Loved the first half of Mess when it came out. Feel like if the second half came anywhere near it would be their strongest album

Edit: SMELL MY SOCKS

really like Mess. was gutted when i got into it and looked up their tour dates to find i’d missed their Dublin date by about 2 weeks

Ahhhhhh I hate that feeling so much

For me their high point was WIXIW - I loved the tone and the layers. It really weirded me out when they released the much more brash and blunt Mess, saying things to the effect of ‘we didn’t know what we were doing on the last electro album, but now we’ve really nailed it!’ It went too big for me, then TFCF felt too small.

the live shows on the TFCF tour were incredible, hope it is the same set up when they get back out and about.

To be fair, Pitchfork reviews a single album every 3 weeks these days.

True but this was 2018! They’ll probably review this new one around November

Yeah, it’s all about those first three albums really. “Liars” was good but in a very straight sort of way but those first three all felt like they were constantly reinventing themselves and sort of leading a lot of alternative stuff.

I absolutely love TFCF, and it’s well worth your time. But besides a couple of good tracks TWTWF definitely sounds like a bunch of cast offs and ideas/demos from TFCF. Haven’t really gone back to it.

I will defend Mess till my dying days. It’s so much fun. It is as somebody else mentioned, horrendously front loaded, but seriously… what a first half.

Quite like Sekwar. I added it to a big playlist and when it came on I was trying to figure out if it was Baxter Dury or Arab Strap,

Yeah Mess is a great record and Can’t Hear Well was one of the tracks of the decade. Saw them at Village Underground after that album and they were great.
