What? how? I’ve got succulents I bought from the 50p bargain bucket at wilko because they were going a bit manky because there was no natural light in store, and they’re still going strong 4 years later, and whose descendants are growing in their own pots.

Dunno, they’re not my domain frankly but I dunno if they get watered too much or not enough or they don’t have enough light or too much light or they’re too cold or something, no idea. They just seem to shrivel up and die quite often.

You don’t water succulents and cacti, they’re desert plants. They want to be somewhere sunny and dry. You give them a small spritz of water rather than pouring water straight on. If the soil is wet, they rot. If the soil is too wet, you can unpot them, wrap the soil in kitchen paper overnight and then leave them unwatered for a few months. I rescued one my dad overwatered that was starting to smell bad, and it’s fine now.

Magic, thanks! I’ll pass this information on, frankly I could do without them being there altogether but they seem to be considered somewhat necessary for whatever reason.

Here’s some I repotted in the summer. The big tree-like one was a 50p Wilko runt a few years ago, and the other one the same is its descendant.

Think my granddad had a bit of a cactus hobby as well actually. They bloody love a plant though my Nan and Granddad, can’t get enough of them.

Think we’ve killed some of those fluffy ones, the one in the flowery pot at the front and the two in the brown pots in the front row

Takes about 20 minutes per side, and needs vinegaring every 2 minutes.

The one in the flowery pot grows really pathetic flowers if you look after it. They’re tiny and sad looking, but on a stem about 50cm long. The fluffy one is called Old Man of the Andes and practically never needs watering. It goes rotten if you do.

Trying to dig out a photo of ours from better times when they were happy and healthy but I’m struggling to find one.

Got a nice plant pot as one of the minor-xmas gifts for my gf so maybe I’ll grab some kind of a succulent to go in there and we can actually keep it alive this time.

Every couple of years they need repotting like this. The stones help drain the water away, the compost is special sand-based stuff for cacti that doesn’t go claggy or damp, and the charcoal helps stop any rot:

I like having plants around - but I’m terrible at looking after them. And I’m far too lazy to read up on how different plants should be potted/ repotted / looked after etc

I just need to hire some kind of indoor gardener to do it all for me

Or get a girlfriend who enjoys that sort of stuff

Just need a girlfriend really - don’t care that much if she like pot plants or not

Had to chuck this cactus out the other week (photo taken on the lift on the way down to the bin). Felt really bad disposing of it, but it got too tall for its own good. Mostly cos I repotted it into a way too huge pot, and the resultant growth spurt meant it needed canes to stay upright. Still, 15 years ain’t a bad slog for a prickly mofo like that, I reckon.
