Their latest EP Dressed in Trenches came out last week and it caught my attention in the new releases thread, and made me realize, by recognizing the cover, that I had last year’s EP Crowd Can Talk on my radar but never got around to it. Probably picked up on that from a DiS new release thread too.
Figured I’d start a thread on them as, having listened to a few things today, they are quite good at the raw post-hardcore and noise rock sound and have signed to Matador now so they’re a band to watch. There’s one other EP and a single on Bandcamp but I’ve listened to these today and was impressed (actually just now starting the new EP).
The band consists of Asher Case (bass, vocals), Issac Lowenstein (drums, percussion), and Kai Slater (guitar, vocals). I’ve learned that Kai Slater is also in bands Dwaal Troupe and Sublime Jupiter Snake Duo which I have not heard, and Asher Case is the son of FACS frontman Brian Case (formerly 90 Day Men, Disappears).
Oh yeah this is really good, fun to watch such kids play so well.
After listening to the new EP Dressed in Trenches again this morning I actually feel it’s slightly inferior to their previous stuff, but I’ve only listened to everything else once.
The Receiver/Sun Ra Jane and Taking Radar/Loose Cricket singles are quite good.
Had a song of theirs come up on shuffle and thought I’d see what they’ve been up to. They’ve had a few singles since this thread, and a new album on the way, June 6, that doesn’t include these singles. All up on the streamers too.
Edit: Link for In the City bandcamp page not working, replaced with Spotify.
Thoughts on the new album? It exceeded my expectations. Based on the single I heard (and maybe the artwork) I thought they were headed down a more garage rock direction but no. This is a post-punk album through and through (with some noise rock and slacker rock bits). Really like it.
It was said in the new release thread that it’s FFO Women & Deerhunter. Accurate although I picked up on far more of the former initially, and not so much Deerhunter until my 3rd listen now.
But what I’m hearing most of is Gang of Four and This Heat (Deceit, specifically).
