I can see why it might be a bad thing for lots of people. From a personal point of view, though, i think it could be a positive thing. I sometimes visit five or six cash machines a day for small amounts of money. Visiting the local branch once a week or so and taking a bigger amount of cash out would mean i was less exposed to fraud, but also stop me getting into pointless, annoying situations where i’m moneyless. I’d also spend less, i reckon. Not saying it’s a good thing, but for me personally the positives would outweigh the negatives.

won’t they need more cash machines if they get rid of the link system though? if they’ve only got one machine in the city all their customers will get fucked off and go to another bank or maybe they realise no one changes bank under any circumstances so can fuck people over all they want

I go cashless by default as it is. still need to get money out though and if my bank had no cash machines I’d change banks.

Yeah agreed. Also there are lots of transactions that can’t really have a substitute for cash. You can’t really use contact less payment for giving money to someone on the street (whether homeless, doing a charity collection, busker etc) or for things like giving donations. Or buying drugs.

Things I’ll regularly withdraw cash for:

  • The gym (I go to a small one that’s just a guy’s converted garage - he’s not set up to take payment by card/direct debit. I suppose I could use bank transfer, but I suspect he isn’t declaring a lot of his income so prefers cash.)
  • The pub
  • If I’m going out for a meal, it’s always annoying when people want to split the bill between loads of cards
  • Just having cash for general usage, e.g. getting lunch out of a roll shop, or going to the newsagents, etc.

Can’t stand it. Worst is always a work colleagues lunch out. Some people piss off early for a meeting and leave a bit of cash, someone else didn’t have a beer so wants to pay less, 14 cards to go through… URGH.

“Who is paying on the HSBC card? HSBC card? Anyone?”

I know I’m moving into general gripe territory but people who order a soft drink and then act as if it doesn’t cost anything and get all defensive when the bill comes. Like a coke costs pretty much the same as a beer you dicks
