I genuinely still listen to pretty much everything from my teen years - even the stinkers by way of nostalgia. But I haven’t heard this one since I bought it on tape when I was about 11 years old.
Album Name Garbage - Version 2.0 Last Time You Listened To It: probably 1999 when I discovered punk instead What You Guess You’ll Rate It: 6.5 Your Actual Rating: 7 Best Track: When I Grow Up is hitting me HARRRRRRRD Any Thoughts: It’s not bad for what it is, it’s just not for me
Last Time You Listened To It: Maybe 20 years ago? What You Guess You’ll Rate It: High. Maybe 8.5 Your Actual Rating: 7.5 Best Track: Golden mine or Can’t stand the sound of my own voice Any Thoughts: The Wood Children nearly were almost big; this album was very well reviewed at the time but I think they just didn’t fit into a particular genre or something. They had something of James about them, but were much more rock. They came and played in Stroud, which was CRAZY! Really, really good live band.
Some really fun lyrics on this record; a favourite being in Golden Mine where the singer very emotionally shrieks “there’s a man in Timbuktu who’s never heard of Bob Monkhouse!”
The good tracks are great and are the majority, but there are a couple that are a bit boring (the slower ones mostly).
There are a couple of offensive words on this record, be warned.
Because of offensive words (different times etc) and the boring slow songs, it’s a 7.5 from me, but it has been a really brilliant listen.
Last Time Listened: 1997? What You Guess You’ll Rate It: 6 Your Actual Rating: 3 Best Track: Staying Out For The Summer Any Thoughts: It was 1996, I was in love and went to see this lot at the Sheffield Leadmill with the object of that affection following the release of the follow up album to this one. At the time the summery jollity of these tunes fitted my mood and there followed a brief hoovering up of their discography. With hindsight my love of this album and affection for the band lasted about as long as the relationship and I’ve probably not listened to this or anything Dodgy related since its dissolution in 1998.
The melodies are obviously familiar, but it’s doing nothing for me today, the tunes are pleasant enough but it has an element of saccharine niceness, combined with its cheeky weed references that just comes across as cringey now, like a stoner Chas ‘n’ Dave! Struggling to listen to this in full and not skip through! Another palate cleanser shall soon be required!
Edit: I’m 3/4 through and just caught myself singing along! If I wake up tomorrow with a Dodgy earworm…
Last Time You Listened To It: Maybe 1988 What You Guess You’ll Rate It: 5/10 Your Actual Rating: 2/10 Best Track: Halloween Any Thoughts: Panto/Fantasy/Power metal from Germany. My 14 year old self was hoping it might be another metallica or something I guess. “watch out…beware…listen…take care…aaahhhhhh it’s Halloween…tonight”. I leave you with that thought x
(I guess I didn’t love it back then, but you listened endlessly to what you spent your money on back then!)
Courtney Love - America’s sweetheart Last Time Listened: 2005 What You Guess You’ll Rate It: 6 Your Actual Rating: 8 Best Track: I’ll do anything
This was a fun listen! I know Courtney’s attempt to rejuvenate Hole was a disaster (don’t think I ever finished that album) but this is punchy and with her trademark snarl. Would listen again.
Last Time Listened: 1989 maybe What You Guess You’ll Rate It: 3 Your Actual Rating: 8 Best Track: China White Any Thoughts: Ok, digging into my old vinyl now, honestly don’t think a needle’s touched this record in at least 35 years! I was expecting to hate it, but I’m actually really enjoying its cheesy 80s German heavy metal vibe! Wunderbar!
Last Time You Listened To It: Properly listened was probably around 1990 What You Guess You’ll Rate It: 6.5 Your Actual Rating: 8.5 Best Track: Revolution Calling, innit? Could have been written about Trump et al. Any Thoughts:@Badgerdeluxe reminded me of the reasonable collection of not good metal albums we had as teens (Hello Death Angel and Flotsam and Jetsam) with his album review upthread. This isn’t one of those; I think I like it more now than I did then. A concept album about a drug addict being hoodwinked into assassinating corrupt politicians in a vile corporatocracy? That’ll do, pig.
It’s ludicrously well executed, and the remastered version actually sounds like people playing in a room. Tate’s vocals are bonkers. There’s a good amount of the guitar parts that remind me of Voivod. Fun and inspiring; it’s a genuine thriller. Ace.
I’ve never actually listened to this despite seeing it mentioned in numerous articles, lists and just general references, going to give it a go on Monday I think!
Amazingly I was just listening to this to write up for my entry.
Loved this as a teenage metal head. Prog metal with talky bits between songs to give an illusion of their being some kind of plot. Shoot it into my adolescent veins.
