I spotted a friend of mine asking about how to entertain teens during lockdown, outside of school they’re less engaged with the crafts and stuff you can entertain younger ones with and I suggested some sort of album listening club - discovering classics, or stuff that really hits the spot with teens, then a space for them to chat about it or write pastiche lyrics or whatever.
Then I thought, maybe it could be done on here? We could suggest ‘seminal’ albums and publish a weekly list on the main site, then provide a forum space here for them to chat where us old uns wouldn’t encroach.
Its a good idea but I’d be wary of the fact they’d have access to all the boards. Depending on how old these kids are, maybe letting them see the Filth Threads as an example wouldn’t be the best
Yeah, but they can find that by themselves any time if they really want to - I mean I’m sure they don’t care about some forum nerds doing countless polls about what’s better - eating ass or eating biscuits, when they have the world of free porn at their fingertips.
It doesn’t have to link to the forums though, could just be some articles on the main site. Idk. Just feels like it’d be cool to do some sort of list for them to engage with. I think our music discovery journey was very different to teens today, they can access way more than we ever could but are perhaps missing out on albums themselves by dipping into songs on spotify or something, idk.
Yeah, my friend who I talked to about it has a kid who has really broad music taste anyway and I guess a teen today already knows more artists or genres than pre-internet teens did. I think some usual suspects are good though, and I think a board of music snobs and indie bellends might be the perfect audience to choose them. (That said it might be we write off stuff that we don’t consider important now or we’re jaded by somehow, but were important to us the time? Like maybe you could replace something angsty and teeny but predictable and maybe problematic like say The Smiths, with something beautiful like early R.E.M. It doesn’t have to be obscure stuff. I wonder do many kids today listen to motown for instance?)
I think my 15 year old niece and some of her friends would be up for it.
And yeah your right I think there is a nice middle ground in the choices, even just on the classics going for say an artist like Nina Simone rather than the Beatles or whatever they have probably already heard.
