this thread is probably the place to talk about something that happened to me recently

me and my sisters were meeting for a meal on a tuesday evening so met in shoreditch and bumbled about being very indecisive but ended up going to brick lane. the usual thing of all the blokes outside trying to convince us that their place was the best, we just picked the one we were standing outside at the point that we couldn’t be bothered with deflecting their questions. so a random pick, fair enough.

overall it was very nice, we all tried all the bits of food we chose (several curries, several sides) and all agreed that everything was great.

thing is, this was right in the middle of brick lane and i’d say we must have arrived at about half seven and left an hour later, as i say it was a tuesday evening but even so… we were the only people in there for the entire time

i can’t tell you how surprised i was, has the continued gentrification of shoreditch nicked all their customers or something?

I just think people’s tastes have changed, and they don’t mind walking down to Whitechapel and eating at one of the places there for a similar price. You have TimeOut banging on about Tayyabs etc every week so people just want to eat there instead.

We had a work leaving do recently and ate at a place on Brick Lane. I was cringing a bit because most our team are from India and Bangladesh, but they were raving about it. 🤷

The traditional customer of the Brick Lane curry houses is the City lad after an evening on the fizzy lager. However, they have finally realised that (a) the food is rarely any good, and (b) there are far more other, and better, nearby options now than there were one or two decades ago.

Given that we thought the food was pretty good, i probably just don’t know anything about good food

Only ever go to a handful restaurants in London when I’m there - Koya Bar (Soho), Diyabakir (Green Lanes), Yijo (Finchley Central) and Song Que (Hoxton). Never needed anything else.

I hate, hate, HATE Dishoom.

The food is pretty decent, but only ever go if I have a table booked in advance. Queuing at Dishoom is for chumps.

Queuing anywhere does my head in. Understand why some places don’t take reservations but it’s such a pain. Really wanted to try Padella but always sacked it off because of the queues. Ended up going by myself on a Monday. Got there at 11:40am - there was already a queue. It’s not even all that.

Have only ever been when we booked. To have so many staff and such bad service is actually quite an achievement.

I’ve been to Dishoom probably 20+ times and the service has always been top drawer (across 4 of their restaurants).

I’ve never queued for Dishoom and despise doing so. I’ve tried to go to Hoppers twice now and each time it’s been 2+ hours for a table. Fuck that. (Although their system’s ok because you put your name down then can go and drink in Soho while you wait but both times I’ve tried that hasn’t been a viable option).

Anyone been to Brigadiers yet? From the same crew behind Hoppers https://brigadierslondon.com/
