He always claimed they got given a pre-made two-film script and then fought New Line to let them make it into 3 parts but didnβt have loads of time after that. It really strongly follows the Radio 4 adaptation too although maybe that was again following Bakshi?
Interesting that weβve essentially had only one version of Gollum/Smeagol too, though. Peter Woodthorpe did both Bakshi and then R4βs version and itβs really obvious that Serkis and everyone else involved in the films were determined to follow Woodthorpeβs lead. Iβm pretty sure I recall Serkis delivering entire sections almost identically to Woodthorpe.
