I feel like this show is going to be big enough and important enough for its own thread.
Great first episode. Looks wonderful, performances were great and sounds fantastic.
I’m almost certainly going to learn a ton of stuff I didn’t already know or perhaps fully understand along the way.
Didn’t know anything about Jackie Robinson Jackie Robinson - Wikipedia but having read this I can now see why he’d have seemed like a superhero to young African Americans.
I watched this last night and very much enjoyed it. The attempt to leave Devon County was very tense and then the change of pace at the end was great fun.
Read the book last year so I was well up for this.
Really enjoyed the first episode and I think that it really managed to convey the central theme of the book, in the way it juxtaposes supernatural horror and the horrific reality of racism and its consequences.
Big into this. V relieved - strongly think that the presentation of HPL here is the only possible way to stage any media around it. The book is good and the series appears to be following it thus far but I suspect they will be forced to work outside of the book’s structure (not going to explain why obv)
But yeah. Glad within the first 15 mins there was direct ‘he was a racist’ without a ‘however’
I could see more or less resembling something like Buffy where there’s generally an overarching theme\direction to the season but there’s still space for sub-narratives within that, there are some stories which I wonder if they’ll omit altogether though
Read this on me hols a couple of summers back. They were developing this even then but I’m sure Elizabeth debicki was meant to be in it. Doesn’t appear to be the case.
The sequence with them trying to get out of the county before sundown was actually way scarier than the weird vampire monsters, so I think they did excellent with that.
Also like @otto mentioned, they got the pulpy tone down so well, absolutely nailed that aesthetic.
