This is a tricky one.
It’s a sprawling narrative and it seems to snap in and out of focus. It won’t suit some viewers because of this.
It looks wonderful, the dialogue is always excellent and the performances are great. Also it’s tense, exciting and moving in places.
It also feels like it’s trying to scratch lots of itches and I think this is what leads to it feeling unfocused.
My gut feeling is that the showrunners are trying to make up for lost decades spent under the yoke of white decision makers and that they’re trying to cram in all manner of stories that they never had opportunity to previously. And that as a result it can feel kind of patchwork at times. I could be wrong about that, just how it feels to me.
I really like it. I think its an important show and by and large my opinion as a white middle aged man is pretty irrelevant. I’d just like more people to watch it.
