Week 14

Right, last stop on ALOTR. Should be a novelty factor at least this week as the band take on The Smiths, Dylan, Pink Floyd, Beach Boys…and Journey!?

Not much more to say at peesent, so without further ado:

A Lifetime of Temporary Relief - Disc 3

The tracklisting is:

Playlist for Disc 3:

The journey cover is lovely, as is “back home again”

Because You Stood Still is an amazing lost cut - crazy it didn’t make it onto an album. Same with Don’t Carry It All - think that would’ve worked well on Trust.

Some guff in there, but that’s to be expected

Don’t carry it all

Genuinely looking forward to hearing Open Arms as I’ve a big soft spot for the original.

It’s just not one I’d ever have paired with Low - makes it acmore interesting prospect than Blowin In The Wind anyway…

Mimi not hitting the notes and giggling in the chorus of “Open Arms” is one of my favorite bits in this whole collection (and is a testament to Steve Perry’s incredible range!)

The third volume is the best of the bunch in my opinion. I remember searching for who originally did “Don’t Carry it All” because there was no way a band can leave an original song of this quality on the cutting room floor.

Proper reply and hopefully new record up later, but for now here’s the poll for ALOTR Disc 3:

  • Kindly Blessed
  • Blue-Eyed Devil
  • Sleep At The Bottom
  • When You Walked
  • Back Home Again
  • Don’t Drop The Baby
  • Surfer Girl (Live)
  • Blowin’ In The Wind

  • …I Love
  • Carnival Queen
  • Overhead
  • Don’t Carry It All
  • Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
  • Because You Stood Still
  • Fearless
  • Shots & Ladders 2

So, Disc 3 is the best of the bunch then - a couple of lost gems and some excellent cover choices.

Because You Stood Still is gorgeous and sandwiched between two such good covers. Love their take on Fearless (from probably the best Pink Floyd album?)

Open Arms was fun. Brave decision to take it on at the original pitch.

I love that cover of Fearless so much.

Week 15

Right, after that diversion let’s get back to their proper albums shall we? I’ve been struggling to get on here recently and it’s all got a little out of sync. I want to get back to new albums on Mondays, so I’ll kick this off today and we’ll let it run all next week, and then get back to weekly Mondays the following week. Apologies all, life etc.

This week’s album is one I loved when it first came out. I only knew a little of their early style at the time, and was a big fan of everything Dave Fridmann was involved in, so big bombastic Low was right up my street. Haven’t played it in a while, so interested to hear whether that’s still the case, and also to find out what DiS makes of this one.

This week’s record is:

The Great Destroyer

The first Low album I heard (had heard “Over The Ocean” but nothing else before it).

Probably the best Low album to listen to first as a 15/16 year old. Lots of catchy songs but still has enough of that ‘Low’ sound. Would argue its their most consistent album - not really any dips from start to finish, and its also their best album for playing live (until Double Negative). Looking back it really should have made them bigger than they are, and its telling that someone like Robert Plant could cover songs from it without changing things up too much.

“Step” has always been my favourite from the album. “Monkey” and “Pissing” are great tracks but having seen Low live about 20 times and them playing both most of the time I am a little tried of them.

ps - special mention for “On The Edge” which I never really got into til I heard it live. Think it would fit much better on The Invisible Way alongside “On My Own”.

Big fan of TGD.

I’m not that keen on Silver Rider - just find it a little more plodding than the others. That’s nit-picking, though. The run from When I Go Deaf onwards is stunning.

always been a bit of a casual Low fan, owned the Christmas album, dipped into the back catalogue on Spotify now and then, really enjoyed the time i saw them live and how they were much louder.

The Great Destroyer was the first one i checked out that made me go “woah, i really need to get more into this band”. really great stuff, right up my street. that and Drums & Guns are still way ahead of the rest of their stuff for me (though i haven’t been doing the Listening Club properly so haven’t heard them all)

California was the first piece of Low material I heard (on a Rough Trade Counter Culture compilation). It’s a very good album, consistent and a good range of tracks. Pissing is brilliant live, but like @colon_closed_bracket said, silver rider is a bit plodding. There’s some underrated gens on here though.

Quite hard to pick 3 here. Caught between 5.

Walk Into The Sea is such a classically good album closer isn’t it?

Just stand back is so underrated…the builds and big solo sound immense and it packs a lot into a short runtime. Maybe my favourite Low song…

Yeah, it’s tough on this one isn’t it! Think I’ll probably be setting 3 votes as the minimum entry criteria for the big playlist.
