I’m confused as to where we are.

But I’m as far as Drums & Guns. I’m enjoying it, and that’s all that matters

Apologies, that’s my fault. I was struggling to get on here, so it was getting later and later in the week when the new record was up. To get back in sync with new records at the beginning of each week, I let Great Destroyer has run a little longer D&G will get its week on Monday.

On that note, it’s been great revisiting The Great Destroyer over the last week. The second half of the record is so good, and opens up beautifully. When I Go Deaf > Broadway > Pissing being a particularly strong run.

Please don’t apologies, it’s been a great thread for discovering a band I didn’t know well!

You don’t sound as if you mean it.

They’re just words to you

(May as well pun my way out of a fuck up)

Yeah, it’s had a different feel from the REM one where there was loads to say about the band and they generally had a bigger cultural influence, whereas this is more of a structured listen through that hasn’t generated as much discussion, but that’s fine. Low records seem to speak for themselves. Glad you’ve enjoyed it - I’ve enjoyed a deep dive into their back catalogue too.

Week 16

So, very enjoyable revisiting Great Destroyer last week and great to hear itvwas as good as I remembered it.

Don’t think I’ve heard this week’s record before for some reason. Dave Fridmann still on production duty, and apparently inspired by the Iraq war. Some Jordan guy said in the official DiS review back in 2007:

Drums & Guns is likely to split opinion to a greater extent than any other piece of Low’s extensive catalogue, but avid fans should not be put off as behind the challenging production and at the centre of all their controlled experimentation lies one of the band’s strongest releases to date.”

…which seems as good an intro as any. Let’s go.

Probably the record I find myself coming back to much less than the rest tbf. Really enjoy it, but it’s never properly clicked. The last line of Hatchet, delivered like a Beatles closing line is one of my favourite bits in a song ever. Harmonies are great on this album.

I also really like the Retribution Gospel Choir recordings of Breaker and Take Your Time

The non-album versions of Murderer and Dragonfly are loads better than the album versions, as is the RGC version of Breaker.

Like the album less than I did at the time. Don’t think I’ll be listening back much.

I do enjoy this album, and it contains a couple of my favourite ever Low songs (the Murderer / Violent Past combo is amongst my favourite album closing of anyone’s), but the production does weird me out a bit with the way it’s all panned. Takes me a while to get my ears around it all sometimes but it’s always worth it.

Drums and Guns is great. I generally think of The Great Destroyer as my favourite but I do listen to Drums and Guns more, it’s very easy to listen to (aside from the vocal panning on headphones)

Great pair of albums

So…that fucking panning eh? Pretty annoying on headphones as others have mentioned. It’s not just Alan’s vocal, everything is slanted to the right. Shame because the reshaping of their sound and the more abstract arrangements are great.

Dust on the Window feels like a relief when it comes as even though her lead is hard panned, she’s at least got a harmony on the left to balance it out more.

the production is really nice except for the panning yeah, which is a bit of a shame - the instruments sound really great on headphones apart from that. i think it’s a far better reinvention than Double Negative. would be nice if they released a new mix of it someday maybe.

I honestly thought I was going deaf in my left ear

Yeah, it’s just a bit weird isn’t it. I kept checking my wires first for a loose connection. I know the Beatles did it on songs like Eleanor Rigby and the VU on The Gift, but even as an artistic decision, it’s just a bit crap. Overshadows a good record.

Week 17

Right, we’re on the home strait now, and have to keep this brief. Low’s 9th full length record - Dave Fridmann dispensed with and recorded in the same Minnesota church as Trust.

This week’s record is:

C’mon

Big fan of this one, but totally understand why others aren’t. If pushed, Nothing But Heart is in my top 5 Low tracks. Was also when I first saw them live (Southbank 2012, think @jordan_229 was there. They played a very deep cut as part of the set).
