Bookmarked for later watching - thanks for posting this :+1:

Decided to give Double Negative a go having never listened to any of their prior albums. Struggled with it a bit on my first listen but spent ages afterwards feeling an urge to hear it again - after playing it a few times there’s a lot to love. In what’s probably a bit of a childish description, it sometimes feels like I’m streaming it from another planet with someone trying to disrupt the signal, but these beautiful sounds manage to break through and contrast with the distortion in an awesome way. Particularly love the opening two tracks; the way Dancing and Blood transitions seamlessly from unnerving to a feeling of confidence (for lack of a better adjective) is something else. I’ll admit there were a few songs in the latter half where my interest decreased somewhat (perhaps a few tracks which were a bit less risky?) Nevertheless, I find myself wanting to come back and listen to the album start to finish repeatedly in spite of a couple tracks being skippable in my mind, and even they will probably grow on me in future listens.

Overall, I liked it - Which albums should I hear next from them?

not childish at all; that’s a brilliant description.

I’d go to ‘I could live in Hope’ next for early low and ‘Things we lost in the fire’ for mid period. The production is very different but the beauty is the same.

Folks, what’s the best song on ‘Double Negative’? I’m finding it impossible to choose. Every year I make a playlist of a songs from my LPs of the year and I really don’t know which song will make the most impact on its own.

Fly in the context of the album, Always Trying to Work It Out outside of it for me

Cheers
Looking forward to working my way through the rest of their stuff. Looks like there’s another 12 or so albums and about 60 or 70 b-sides, lovely

You’re in for an absolute treat

I’d probably go for:

  • I Could Live In Hope
  • Trust
  • Drums and Guns

I’d say that C’Mon is a 7/10 and The Invisible Way is a 6.5, but I think the rest are all 8s and above. They’re easily my favourite band and it makes me really happy that a whole new bunch of people are discovering them at the moment.

Having the same problem. I don’t really have an individual ‘favourite’ on the album. It’s a rare case where the thing works as a whole, and listening to one track in isolation from it sounds a bit strange. I can’t even listen to it on shuffle, finding I need to listen to it in order every time.

I’ve sort of settled on ‘Dancing and Fire’ in my playlist, as it feels slightly self-contained in its nature. But occasionally slip over to ‘Disarray’ or even ‘Poor Sucker’.

Gah. Who knows. I generally treat the whole album as one big astounding song. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m going for Fly for my selection. Although there were a few choices from the first half of the album.

I’d go with The Great Destroyer and Things We Lost In The Fire; a nice rounded representation of their sound between them.

Ones and Sixes is their best IMO.

Yup.

I didn’t even think of that one. Lies is probably in my top five Low songs. (That coda that Mimi sings )

I think ones and sixes was as much a relief as anything, something fresh after their worst two albums.

Great post. Like your description of listening to this otherwordly album. Double Negative is my first encounter with Low also, but via this thread and its cracking recommendations, I’m enjoying Ones and Sixes, Drums and Guns and Things We Lost In The Fire too. Still mostly in love with Double Negative at this point though.

Fair, though I’ve not heard any Low past C’mon. What about Christmas?

Glad you rate Trust as highly as I do. Love that album.
