Ludwig

Really enjoyed this series, even with David Mitchell playing David Mitchell.

Put me in mind of Jonathan Creek.

Good fun, not as silly as McDonald and Dodds.

Thought?

would be better if it was just called Mark and was a spin-off, but I like it

Have watched episode 1&2, yes quite Jonathan Creek-ish.

If I was nitpicking I would say Ludwig oscillates between unable to function in the real world and commanding a room of people a little too easily. But I get a lot of joy out of hearing David Mitchell say ā€˜hold on a minute’.

I dont think the word Ludwig was used at all in episode 2. Its probably hard for some viewers to build up affection when he’s called John all the time.

Taggart, Shoestring, Morse…

Think sometimes the danger with these comedy dramas is that they’re not funny enough to make you laugh regularly and not interesting enough to keep you interested on that front either. This one’s doing a decent job on both fronts though, and it’s really well shot too.

Just really good comfort telly.

Really glad Karl Pilkington is actually in it rather than just an Easter Egg appearance

My biggest problem is that the weekly crimes aren’t entertaining enough (with exceptions)…when compared to Creek they’re actually pretty mundane and Ludwig often just solves them within his own mind without the audience having any part of the solution. Reminds me of hbomberguy’s criticism of Sherlock…we are told about his brilliance rather than shown it.

Episode spoiler -

Thinking especially of the episode set in the school. All the back and forth just to discover that the fucking ā€œlocked doorā€ paradox was solved by the killer HIDING BEHIND said door then slipping out - at great risk if being caught, imo. Stupid telly

The overarching narrative is more engaging, but due to that it suffers as a ā€œcomfort watchā€.

Yeah, I think this is true and really the acting and visuals are carrying it where the murder plots could/should be doing more heavy lifting but it’s still proper BBC scone-TV and I’m enjoying it.

I’d read this as reinforcing the point that this isn’t a procedural, he isn’t a detective and the murders are things he’s just happening to solve as they present themselves as puzzles, which he’s good at, but are realy a distraction from what he’s trying to do.

The inevitable second series is going to have to address that if he is going to be a consultant

Really enjoyed this. But it’s very fortunate that all the killers like to spill their guts after one flimsy bit of evidence that would never stand up in court, or else it wouldn’t work :joy:
