I think Pinkerton will stand up because there is a self awareness there, Rivers is not an aspirational character, he is singing about how flawed he is, and it ends with him apologising and withdrawing, the album is named after lieutenant Pinkerton a complete scumbag that rivers presumably relates too. Think it often gets talked about as just male self pity, but I think it’s deeper than that, seems to be also about him struggling with darker side of himself and that kind of honesty is rare, that’s what makes it a special album. Having said that across the sea is pretty cringe
