Reasonable effort, this. Not sure it’s worth me doing my own as well. As you say, listen to The Fragile - it’s top 10 of all time for me. The title track is maybe my favourite NIN song.

I just attempted a pre-reunion Afghan Whigs one. This was REALLY hard given how every song on Gentlemen could and probably should have made it, and how every album is fantastic start to finish. I made sure to include at least one from each album, and limit myself to no album taking up more than 1/3rd of the playlist. 12 songs, 53 minutes.

  • Hey Cuz (Up In It)
  • Kiss the Floor (Congregation)
  • Miles Iz Ded (Congregation)
  • Be Sweet (Gentlemen)
  • Debonair (Gentlemen)
  • Fountain and Fairfax (Gentlemen)
  • My Curse (Gentlemen)
  • Crime Scene Part One (Black Love)
  • My Enemy (Black Love)
  • Bulletproof (Black Love)
  • Summer’s Kiss (Black Love)
  • Uptown Again (1965)

There were also 4 equally deserving candidates from the largely overlooked Up In It, so I just went with “Hey Cuz” because it’s the most frenetic.

I like the track list but wouldn’t have started with Brave… For me that’s a late on dancey number.

Making this playlist on Deezer but Up In It isn’t on there. Can you suggest an alternate first track that would also work? I think all the other albums are available

That’s really, really hard - “Turn on the Water” from Congregation feels like a good replacement, or you could just end things with “Neglekted” off of 1965 instead. The real answer is probably adding more from Gentlemen or “Faded” off of Black Love.

I’ll just add all three you mentioned on… I can handle over 12 tracks and 60 minutes

It’s chronological

Taking a shot at Modest Mouse, having to accept that several all-time classics are going to be left off. At the last second I ended up trading “Beach Side Property” + “A Different City” for “Ohio” + “Head South” - not sure how I feel about that yet but “Ohio” has always secretly been one of their best and most deflating songs and “Head South” has that incredible outro. This list really got shaped by the time limit.

  • Ohio (This Is a Long Drive)
  • Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset (This Is a Long Drive)
  • Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine (Lonesome Crowded West)
  • Doin’ the Cockroach (Lonesome Crowded West)
  • Trailer Trash (Lonesome Crowded West)
  • Bankrupt on Selling (Lonesome Crowded West)
  • Baby Blue Sedan (Building Nothing out of Something)
  • Whenever You Breath Out, I Breathe In (Positive / Negative) (Building Nothing out of Something)
  • Lives (The Moon and Antarctica)
  • Life Like Weeds (The Moon and Antarctica)
  • Parting of the Sensory (We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank)

I feel bad including only one song from the later albums, considering I’m such a huge fan and defender of them. It’s also weird seeing only two songs from “The Moon and Antarctica” given that it’s either my first or second favorite non-Pumpkins album ever. Truly the second greatest band of all time.

No Dramamine :astonished::astonished::astonished::astonished:

I love Dramamine but I’ve never been as high on it as everyone else for some reason. I’m more upset about being forced to leave off Beach Side Property and Tundra/Desert from that album.

Tundra is one of the only prime MM songs that I dislike and Dramamine may be my fav song ever.

What’s amazing is that I also love them and yet might only have 1 song in common with you if I did my list.

I love it for the sheer mania and release, you can almost feel his head cracking at points. The only comparison I can think of is “XYU” by the Pumpkins. And that moment near the end where you think it can’t get any crazier and then it’s like a drum canon is fired into your stomach.

Very nice. Pretty close to what mine would be. I’d definitely have Faded in there and maybe Double Day as well (and I’ve never heard Up In It).

Yeah, I really wanted to include Faded, I took it out last second when I realized I had inexplicably forgotten Crime Scene Part One. You really can’t go wrong with anything of theirs.

Definitely give Up In It a shot if you like the rest of their stuff. I get the sense it’s usually overlooked as the standard “noisy, before they had it figured out” album, but that’s really not the case at all. It’s overall faster and more raw than what came later, but the songwriting and emotion and tension are all there. I might even put it over 1965. (And his screaming on it is incredible.)
