Maplaylist #1: Manchester

Have had this idea for a while and think we did something similar a while ago / years back on old forums but I was thinking each week we pick a different town or city, and share great music from there.

Kicking off with Manchester as it’s a city that is often buried by a few stale male acts from forever ago and this blah playlist by Noel Gallagher was so dull I decided to start making a playlist of acts from Manchester (and a few from surrounding area or who are synonymous with the city).

Here’s what I’ve got so far

Share a track or three from Manchester that you love below — especially lesser known acts more DiSsers might be into

Can’t seem to think of any that aren’t on the list yet, but three all-time favorite discoveries from the forums:

Doves - The Cedar Room

Oceansize - Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs

Everything Everything - In Birdsong

The greatest Manchester track of all time is obviously Voodoo Ray, but the greatest Manchester band of all-time were Sir Yes Sir.

Here’s two. Think there’s a strong correlation between them. The Stone Roses are obviously one of the “stale male” acts referred to, but I would argue that’s a revisionist attitude rather than what they set out to do in the first place

Nothing featuring Browno or Morrissey on my playlist… it’s currently lacking some John Squire tbf (does Altrincham count as Manchester?)

It was the Noel Gallagher list I was referring to rather than yours - just think a lot of the time the Stone Roses get lumped into ‘lad’ culture these days which is completely understandable, but at the time that culture didn’t really exist and they’ve been co-opted into it it that makes sense

Just rediscovered this little time capsule that sounds so wonderfully Mancunian

Was only half-joking (I’ve never been a fan) (Brown’s anti vax stuff was final straw for me)

A bit of New FADs is probably needed

Oh yeah - I’m no great fan of what he’s become at all, but I’ve got a lot of time for the first Stone Roses album. Just find it quite odd that they became embraced by the ‘lads’, in the same way that Ride did after Andy Bell joined Oasis. Neither of them seemed that laddy at the time

I was going to recommend this Fall track because it’s about the popular Manchester hobby of hating London.

But I see Hit the North is already on there

A Hannett/Hooky classic

Terrible chancers jumping on a bandwagon but this is still such a great record

And obviously this is up there with Voodoo Ray as the best Manchester tune

Then, going back a little you have Salford’s finest Elaine Bookbinder

Stockport’s original art rockers

And the proto-Radiohead
