Greatly enjoyed the tests that potential Canadian prime ministers have to excel at in **Twentieth Century **- how to wait in line, leg wrestle and club a baby seal.

Enjoyed Twentieth Century too

It was like John Waters had written a new version of 1984 directed by Guy Maddin

One of my all time favourites.

Hey, @laika did you ever manage to watch this? I assume your jury service was cancelled/postponed though :frowning_face:
Looks like it might be on 4oD now. Well worth a look…

On Film4 again this coming Monday (if it isn’t on All4)

No, I never did! Jury service or no jury service I still want to see this. @littleforts - thanks for the Film4 tip! Do you know if it’s likely to go on to All 4 after this? If not I can see it’s available to stream elsewhere, so this is something to look forward to either way. Thanks for the nudge

I’ve not really noticed All 4 put older films up so I reckon it’s unlikely

Bah never mind, very happy to pay for a stream with this many recommendations behind it :+1:

No need, it seems to be in the public domain in the US

Tonight we watched A History of Violence and it was absolutely baffling that it has 7.4 on IMDb and won a bunch of awards. Dreadful.

Watched Crossing Delancey on the back of a guardian article I shared on here a while back - meant to be a truly Jewish romcom rather than one that just hints at Jewishness but in a sanitised way (was the basic thrust of the article)

Enjoyed it a lot, had a really good sense of place, and felt like a proper lost gem of the time - had lots of the trappings People love about When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail etc but I’ve never heard it mentioned before at all. Only issue is I started to take against the main character a bit towards the end, so when she ended up with the guy, I wasn’t as invested as I’d wanted to be - thought he could find someone better!. Fully recommend to any romcom fan though

Recently watched:

Disconnect - Follows several separate and tragic stories of people some of who then connect with the internet. Ensemble cast includes Jason Bateman, Andrea Riseborough, Hope Davis, Alexander SkarsgĆ„rd and Frank Grillo. Well acted and constructed but didn’t totally click with me as I hoped it would. But still pretty good with a good ending 7/10.

The Magnificent Ambersons - Orson Welles directs and narrates. A rich family’s fortune dwindles and another’s rises but mainly a story of not being with the one you love. Joseph Cotten and Anne Baxter are always great. 7.5/10.

Lucky - Excellent horror film on Shudder. Brea Grant stars and wrote the screenplay and directed by Natasha Kermani an Iranian-American filmmaker who I haven’t heard of before this.
I won’t give away the plot but it’s an excellent allegorical film regarding the #MeToo movement. It’s a ā€œhorrorā€ film if you want to categorise it into one simple word genre but it’s so much more than that.
The Guardian and Heaven Of Horror both gave it 4/5. I just saw the scores before watching and didn’t read the actual reviews but read them immediately after watching the film. The one Karina Adelgaarde wrote on the Heaven Of Horror site was brilliantly written and I got even more out of the film after reading.
Not necessarily a horror in the traditional sense but definitely a brilliant film. 8.5/10.

Last Holiday - Queen Latifah works at the cookware section at a department store and finds out she has three weeks to live. She quits her job and heads to Czech Republic to blow all her savings on a final holiday and also meet her favourite chef, unfortunately played by Gerard Depardieu. The film easily could have been shit but Latifah is absolutely brilliant in this and plays a loveable character with charm that’s often hard to pull off. Excellent film. 8/10.

Shaolin Prince - Shaw Brothers. Good use of wires in this film. Makes up for the slapstick goofy kung fu scenes. Not one of their better ones for me. 6/10.

Ooh I really didn’t like Lucky

That’s fair enough.

It did click with me and enjoyed reading the reviews after watching.

I’ve got some long nights at work and so my days at home watching films are on hold for a short time.

I’ve not seen any reviews, I went on Shudder to watch the Dark and The Wicked but went for Lucky as it was shorter (was absolutely shattered last night so thought it would be a less taxing watch) but yeah, didn’t really grab me at all I’m afraid

Felt a bit cheated by Last Holiday when it turned out she was actually fine. Nice fuzzy film though.

Thought I’d missed LA 92 as it’s just left Netflix - it’s also free to view on National Geographic’s YouTube channel. Recommended
