been saying for ages that my first memory of football is Gazza against Scotland but clearly that’s not true because I absolutely 100% remember the FA cup final that was just before that in '96
can’t believe i was talking shit about that for so long
It was a Sondico poster, think she got it from a sports shop. He was England #1 at the time. Think he’d just signed for Wednesday from Rangers. Quite liked Wednesday then. They lost both cup finals to Arsenal in 92/93. Remember recording those games and watching them every weekend for weeks. Cut the names and badges out of the paper and sellotaped them to the back of the cases.
That fucking game.
That ridiculous sending off.
That utter cunt Ferguson in charge.
Probably one of the lowest points of my entire time watching North End, throwing that game away and knowing we were heading for relegation. Thanks for reposting it…
think for me it’d be Italia 90 - I definitely remember watching the 3rd place playoff, probably saw other bits but I dunno.
also remember watching the FA Cup final and Cup Winners Cup final in 1991 - my dad was a Spurs fan so was probably more invested in the former than the latter.
Somewhat cruelly, this is the first game I ever watched:
My dad was a lapsed Chelsea fan and my mum only really got into football when I did also as a Norwich fan (her family were Hearts hilariously despite being Italian Catholics) but Norwich’s most famous moment was enough to get us all watching. I only have a vague memory of it, but it’s obviously sticks in my mind (along with a young Dennis Bergkamp’s Inter dumping us out of the next round) as I’ve watched it many times since, especially given its all been downhill after that…
Next is this for some reason
And then by USA '94 I was fully hooked
Can’t remember exactly what was my first game I went to live but it would have been after we got relegated to Division 1. Vs Stockport in 1997 vaguely sticks out?
Always really clearly remember that Kanchelskis handball and I’m not sure why.
Genuinely without looking i bet i could name most of that Norwich squad…
Gunn, Butterworth, Sutch, Prior, Culverhouse, Adams, Crook, Ullathorne, Goss, Ekoku, Sutton, Shutt…? Can’t think who the wide players were. O’Neill?
Ach, just checked, Newman, Bowen, Polston, Ruel bloody Fox.
Carl Shutt somehow didn’t play for Norwich.
None of those are real people
What’s the opposite of a newgen?
Hulkamania?
I have a slightly guilty liking for Hearts on the basis that the only Scottish League game I’ve ever been to was at Tynecastle. I went for a short break to Edinburgh a few years back. It rained constantly and after two days of getting drenched walking around the sights I happened to notice they were playing on the Wednesday night at home to Motherwell. I thought that might be better than wandering between bars in the rain or staying in the hotel. Asked at the tourist office how to get there and the woman behind the counter looked at me like I’d asked for a package tour to Runcorn. The football wasn’t great, but I’m sorry to admit I quite enjoyed it.
Was gonna say you were nailing it until Shutt? The fuck? Who was he
Never been to Tynecastle (or Easter Road for that matter) just past them, both seem nice enough stadiums
Yeah, it’s a decent ground. There was a smaller, older stand down one side then, but I think that’s now been rebuilt. I was surprised by the high attendance, too, as it was midweek and they were in the second tier at that point.
The Edinburgh clubs are pretty well supported, it is a big city after all, they just so often exist in the shadow of the Old Firm that people often forget that.
I have incidentally been to Fir Park, Motherwell vs Inverness, I was in the away end
Just found out the top scorer of the inaugural Premier League. If you didn’t know and were to guess who would you have said it was?

Thought it was Andy Cole? Guess that must have been the second season in which case no idea
Wasn’t Andy Cole 94/95 and thus third season?
Looked it up, nope you’re right.
