yeah I went back to the hat land yesterday and found loads of extra stuff - the narrative does seem to rush you through the 1st couple of worlds a bit

Think I’ve settled on doing a fairly decent amount of exploring on each level - but not trying to get absolutely everything. I’ll enjoy coming back to them all once I’ve kicked Bowser into touch.

Oh and big shout out to the evil wedding planners

The game opens up more when you’ve finished the storyline. So don’t worry about “finishing” it too quickly

Has anyone else noticed that in New Donk City the moped makes a revving sound through the HD rumble?

Incredible game.
I’d finished the story with around 200 moons and now it has really opened up!
So many wonderful little moments, I’ve been sat beaming ear to ear throughout.

quite enjoying the negative reviews on metacritic

Enjoyed the last remaining Sega stan there claiming that it’s a rip off of Sonic Adventure

Favourite moon so far is Wooded Kingdom where you stack the goombas to seduce the female goomba!

Story done. That’s a great final few acts, isn’t it? And the post game looks a blast!

Can’t decide where it ranks at this point in relation to my favourite two Mario games, 64 and Galaxy, but it’s up there I reckon.

Has anyone played handheld yet? Weren’t there warnings that it wouldn’t work as well? How did it hold up? I’ve only played on the TV with the kids or the TV.

Really fancy getting a Switch tbh, this game looks like so much joy. £280 is a bit much for the wallet atm tho.

Yep, mostly been playing handheld. It’s a joy. Only pain is that you can’t do the motion control moves, so the odd moon is out of reach.

Just left NDC - that was amazing classic Donkey Kong! the HD rumble for the moped is so well done too and the minigames with online leaderboards

It works fine, the graphics get bumped down to a noticeable level though. Appears all anti aliasing gets turned off so it doesn’t look as clean and sharp BUT it plays fine and smooth

Apparently the rumble is done through tiny speakers in the joycons. Pretty sure the moped rumble is the sound of the engine being piped through those speakers.

Two 30th birthdays over the weekend and moving house means I am pretty behind but managed to play for a little bit last night.

I’ve unfrozen the desert so I assume that is that level completed. Still playing around looking for other moons/ enough coins to get a cowboy outfit.

So I’ve just completed the kingdom with the flowers and I’m not feeling as awe-induced as I expected I would have. I don’t know if this is because I’m trying to follow the advice some people posted above about trying to get through the plot without going crazy trying to collect moons. As a result, each of the worlds so far seems kind of small… It’s not like I haven’t done ANY exploring yet, but I’ve tried to limit it. It seems really really easy (everything has been fun, just super easy - e.g. the boss fights).

Am I taking the wrong approach? Or do I just need to stick at it as I’m still only in the early stages… I am enjoying it, just not as much as I thought I would be. Right now if I keep going at the pace I am I feel like the story will probably end after a few hours of playing… (hope I’m wrong!).

maybe you just don’t like Mario much?

It is easy. It’s meant to be completed

Bit of a blunt reply. I wasn’t meaning to criticise the game much. I love Mario, have amazing memories of playing Mario 64 as a young kid and then sunshine and galaxy as a teenager. I AM enjoying this game a lot, just feel like each world seems very small (due to focusing on the story so far)

Maybe I’m just being thick and it’s easier (and therefore quicker) now I’m older and better at games. Just feeling unsure of whether I should be staying in each kingdom more and exploring more or blitzing through the story!

Every game is meant to be completed, no?

But yeah, I appreciate it’s a Mario game. I swear I remember Sunshine/Galaxy being more challenging though. But I think in reality I probably just need to stick at it, as I’m still relatively near the beginning of the game! I’m sure it’s just the passing of time making me forget that every Mario game starts easy…
