I saw this today. Marty Supreme doesn’t come out in Poland until late January but a few places not too far from me (although not in my home town) are having ‘przedpremiera’ (translation: pre-premiera - here they call the release dates of films ‘premieres’ even though my understanding of the word is that premiere is the official one-off things) today and tomorrow. For context, I’ve have agoraphobia for about 6 years, and before this year, I had only been to the cinema 3 times since Covid and had a panic attack in June 2021 in the cinema. I also haven’t left my home town by myself since April 2022. I bought the ticket 10 days ago to see this in Katowice. I also have panic attacks when trying to walk in snow, so up until Sunday, I was thinking about not going, because of the stress of going to another city 1 hour away by train, and navigating from my flat to the train station here, and then from the train station in Katowice to the cinema was giving me a full sense of dread. I tested the boots yesterday after a snow storm and they gave me some confidence.
It was not an enjoyable experience getting there and back, but that’s what I was willing to put myself through because I really wanted to see this film before the end of the year.
I loved the film. I’ve liked Chalamet in other things, but I really think this is his best performance. I read a review on the train home where they compared him to people like Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon, and I kind of get it. And yeah, I saw Uncut Gems back in 2019 like everyone else. That’s a rare film that I watched twice in the same day. Weird Boxing Day that - I saw Uncut Gems in the morning, went to the cinema and saw the Jumanji sequel with The Rock etc, and then came home and watched Uncut Gems. And I would really like to see Marty Supreme again. And yes, this is doing a similar thing, the same way that If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You is also doing a similar thing.
One of my favourite things about this is recognising all the faces and going ‘Oh shit, it’s them’ - I knew that people like Kevin O Leary and Tyler the Creator were in this, but when I saw Penn Jillete Abel Ferrara David Mamet and although I didn’t recognise him while watching the film, in hindsight, it’s clear that the guy that Marty and Walter hustle is played by Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke’s son I also appreciated the casting of Endo, which I also didn’t realise until looking it up later.
I loved it. It is not as instantly chaotic as Uncut Gems, the madness doesn’t start until about 45(? I didn’t look at the time) minutes, but the first part sets up a lot of necessary elements that all explode in the rest of the film. If I we have to compare it to Uncut Gems, I think this is the superior film because of that. It’s also laugh-out-loud hilarious in places.
I’m now safely home, and so glad I took the (relative for most people, but not for me) risk of taking the trip to see it.
