One of the traits of the hobbits, a sort of sub species of humans which feature heavily in these films, was that they are not as tall as regular folk

The Lord of the Rings films cannot be judged on length without a degree of discussion about which cut of the film is being discussed.

For example, the theatrical cut of The Fellowship of the Ring is the shortest but if you accidentally watch the extended version it ends up being longer than The Return of the King
