I have now watched The Hobbit (1/3)

Not as awful as I was expecting, but a big old CGI mulchfest. Felt like they really had to shoe in a lot of the cast from the LOTR films. Also the chances of a ring flying through the air and landing perfectly on your finger is like 12,000,000/1, yet somehow it happens in both sets of trilogies.

Furious that they get bailed out by the eagles AGAIN just write any story you like and then have that ending.

If I was to make a topic based on the questions asked in the interesting yet annoyingly hosted podcast Films To Be Buried With, would you take part

I traded my theatrical cut of LotR in to buy the extended editions. Silly me thought there’d be a theatrical cut mode on here… but there isn’t. Now what I’m left with is something that’s interesting to watch once or twice but overall stands as a powerful example of how editing can turn a meandering and unengaging script into films that are watchable and actually really really good.

Watched the first half of Two Towers last night and I don’t know if I can be arsed with the second tonight, even though I love that film.

I watched the Kreutzer Sonata yesterday, was pretty good

a modern day adaptation of a Tolstoy story, with Danny Huston as a jealous husband convinced his wife is having an affair

it’s another collab between Huston and director Bernard Rose, who did the excellent ivans xtc

it’s shot in the same lof fi, improv style with digital cameras, which works really well- it’s not as good as ivans xtc though

Get a loada this asshat!

Why not try watching Jerry Maguire (1996)?

I rewatched portrait of a lady on fire because my darling partner hadn’t seen it and we both liked it very much.

Think it’s very likely to be the best film I see at the cinema in 2020

Thanks for the reminder I’ll watch it soon

Did you know M. Night Shyamalan wrote the screenplay for Stuart Little? Now THAT is a good film.

Bait - amazing. Loved the fancy wanky way it was shot & the story genuinely made me furious a number of times. I’ve never wanted to give any character a slap as much as I have Hugo.

Vampire’s Kiss was dumb as hell but phew was that a performance for the ages from ole Cage. Pretty fun

cry baby - no I don’t like this sort of thing at all thanks

Loveless - thought this was going to be one of those impenetrable European kitchen sink drama dirges but it’s actually really great. Really compelling script and the parents were entertainingly horrible people. Loved the search and rescue people.

watched Ran. more like also-ran amirite LOL

it was fine. could have really done with a tripod for most of it, the very slightly shaky camera was doing my head.

The scene with the kid stood behind a door whilst his parents argue and his face is just a silent scream of pain and fear has stayed with me
