Also there’s absolutely no one there which is weird for these early fights

Ramped up security/ bag checks*

*they’ve banned lots of types of bags tbf (no FANNY PACKS on the list made me chuckle), so ill imagine its gonna take time

WELL UP FOR IT

Guess that went as everyone expected but dragged out over a few more rounds (I was expecting a round 5 or 6 stoppage). Mayweather didn’t look remotely troubled at any point - kind of standard when you’re fighting a chap who has NEVER BOXED AT AMATEUR OR PRO LEVEL (had a massive grin on my face for the first few rounds at the absurdity of it all tbh, but still - had a good evening).

Sleeping pattern is now absolutely fucked for the whole long weekend so that’s good. Also way too hammered for this time on a Sunday morn… Alas.

Smashed it!

I guess it’s a result whereby everyone wins. Floyd retires undefeated with a nice final top-up of €150m or so including sponsors. McGregor goes far enough to earn the respect of the neutrals, pundits snd most doubters, and earns enough money to retire, or to invest in UFC or branch out on his own. Boxing retains its standing and most of it’s credibility. UFC gains crossover fans and huge exposure to new audiences. The networks earn a lot of money, as do the promoters, lawyers, trainers, etc. The pundits have lots to write about.

It makes you wonder…given there was reputedly half a billion dollars at stake across the board whether we’re a bit naive when we suspend disbelief sometimes and assume these events always have sporting integrity. Was this any different to, say, Brock Lesnar v the Undertaker? Was there realistically any chance that the most dominanant, highest-earning sportsman of modern times was going to bow out leaving his sport’s reputation nursing such a monumental black eye?

Didn’t watch it, was up for a few hours before I remembered to read the result on the BBC website. Can I have my indie points now please?

Sounds like it went exactly as it was expected to go. Now let’s draw a line under the whole sorry affair and never speak of it again.

I had a great time; thought it was a good fight and conor showed out well. From a sporting perspective was interesting to see how conor’s lack of conditioning was preyed on. He could have sent away a lot of boxers just not arguably the greatest of all time who’s never lost?! As stated above, good look for both parties. Just wish they took the nauseating level of money out of it for fans… 5000 empty seats due to the price is silly. Saw irish guys on the news stating theyd dropped thousands on tickets which is admirable dedication but also taking the piss on a colossal level

Best case scenario for everyone really. Biggest payday of either’s career, Conor made a good show of himself, he’s a bigger star than ever and although it was a good stoppage he wasn’t floored or anything. Mayweather gets to go home undefeated with about $300m, not bad for a night’s work. McGregor will absolutely fight again, but probably in ufc against Diaz and he’ll be able to demand a fucking King’s random to do so. Boxing is safe and its integrity intact. Then they’re both best friends (unsurprising given the fucking payouts I guess) and we can all look back and weep at our complete lack of culture at our leisure.

As an Irishman that’s never really liked his personality (bit problematic and all dat) beforehand I obviously got totally swept up as the night went on.
Thought he acquited himself very well tbh, given the fact it was essentially an amateur fighting the greatest defensive boxer of all time.
To sum up: he’s not the worst lad. Did Dublin proud.

I’m just waiting for someone to expose their rehearsals of the whole routine.

Quite enjoyed it, I was almost surprised by the relative lack of antics\the level of professionalism once the fight actually started Mayweather more or less treated MacGregor like any other boxer, although I don’t think I’ve seen him as aggressive as he was in the later rounds and MacGregor to his credit got after it, tried to win and ultimately went out on his shield.

It’ll be interesting to see what MacGregor does now obviously I’d expect him to go back to the UFC but I can’t help but wonder whether he might do something unexpected given the amount of money he’s probably made from this.

absolutely disagree with this. He got caught absolutely flush walking onto a full weight uppercut chin first in the 2nd round, it barely even registered and then he realised he could just sit in range because he had no respect for McGregor’s power (and wanted to get a KO).

Watched it for the first time last night, thought the commentary was awful, acting like Conor was winning the fight early on when he was mostly punching Floyd’s guard. Had it 8 rounds to 1 by the stoppage, which was a very good one because Conor was going to take a really bad amount of punishment if it had kept going.

Mayweather looked old and slow, McGregor looked ok but didn’t have any snap in his punches and was clearly tiring even after 3 rounds. Despite that it was fairly watchable, tbf

Yeah was surprised at how crisp real boxers punches seem in comparison to McGregor’s. Probably a different story with mms gloves and so forth but he looked sloppy and weak striking.

It’s about distance. Basically in an MMA fight the striking is at range because they have to guard for kicks, takedowns etc, where boxing the distance is shorter. That’s why instead of his normal thing of getting a good amount of distance and dodging punches, Mayweather was sitting in close and letting McGregor hit him where he couldn’t generate power, the only way McGregor might’ve landed something damaging would’ve been from distance, where a boxer would be much more powerful and accurate from inside

Ah never thought of it like that! In hindsight Conor was probably being a bit lazy in not adapting to that, which isn’t a surprise.

I think it’s a bit harsh to judge mcgregor on that, he’s obviously slowed a lot but in terms of his in-fight tactics mayweather’s the best I’ve ever seen and widely considered as one of the best ever, and that’s not going to go with age
