think a lot of stuff lived on in the east like in byzantium and syria and places like that but centralised authority collapsed in the west to a point and people got well into the feudal system

Aye, I guess it’s an impression that’s definitely biased by the western teachings of history.
There’s some book that’s meant to be dead good called Destiny Disrupted which is basically history through Islamic eyes that I keep meaning to buy and read but, realistically, I’ll probably not end up doing it
