I think even Wolf Alice had a few quid on Sons Of Kemet. Their win came as a surprise to them too.
Idles seem a good bet for at least a nomination as everyone has said already. Trying to think what the most derided nominations will be, there’s got to be something obvious that I’m forgetting about
Tom Walker is a good bet for this spot.
Tom Walker, Tom Odell, Jack Savoretti.
I’ll eat my hat if the Twilight Sad get on the list. Not that they don’t deserve it.
Yeah, no chance, it’s only really the big guns who ever get on the shortlist after their second or third album
Oh it’ll be that Lewis capaldi won’t it
Oh yeah, Thom Yorke will probably be shortlisted
Nilufer Yanya maybe?
Don’t think I’d listened to the Sons of Kemet album yet at the time but in retrospect that’s such a missed open goal. They finally had a jazz album on the list that wasn’t a complete outsider, and then went and absolutely shat the bed instead.
(Also it’s just a great album of course)
Yep
I’d love it if Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs snuck in after the year they’ve had. I wouldn’t put any money on it happening ofc but they’ve got a better shot than any underground riff wizards I can recall and they do love to show how musically diverse they are.
Feel like the 1975 are a shoo in, and will probably cop a lot of this.
Would like to see The Japanese House and Self Esteem in there.
New Lighthouse Family album on Friday
Big Joanie would be great but I can’t see it happening. As for Hen Oggled, if Peasant didn’t get nominated after being critically lauded all over the place I can’t see the mostly ignored (albeit absolutely great) Mogic getting on the list.
I was trying to think of some suitable metal releases, and I went for Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard as my never gonna happen but should pick.
I wouldn’t dismiss Pigs actually. If the last twelve months have taught us anything it’s that they’ve got a shit hot PR team. Could be a leftfield choice.
Soak in with a shout?
People make the same mistake about the Mercury as they do about the main stages at Glastonbury, in that they think it has something to do with ‘alternative music’ as we understand it. Really it only aspires to be just ‘alternative ‘ enough to retain some credibility.
Yeah MWWB are probably a bit too leftfield, and in the battle of the bands with brilliantly terrible names I reckon they’d rather be saying Pigs than Weed all night.
The dudes at Rocket have done a hell of a job with them, tis true.
Think Tirzah should but won’t be nominated.
