Mercury Prize 2017

#81

Sampha should win by a distance here.

#82

Of the three I’ve heard (Sampha, Stormzy, The xx), Sampha is easily the best

#83

Sheeran needs the money most. Give it to him.

#84

No Jane Weaver.

I’m oot.

#85

Jesus.

That wonky eyed ginger gets everywhere FFS.

Piss poor list.

#86

even The Big Moon aren’t very good really

#88

What do the asterisks mean in this thread?

Is it ‘they actually won’?

#89

Yeh.

#90

Yes I’ve always had a soft spot for Nelly Furtado.

#91

That J Hus album is absolutely fantastic

Best of the bunch there by quite a way imho

#92

bit of a joke Richard Dawson wasn’t nominated in this. Dunno if they’d have applied but I would’ve thought being on a Domino imprint they’d have stumped up the cash

#93

I think it’s time to put the Mercury Prize out of its misery. That shortlist is so depressing and so predictable (the big pop hit album/the polite side of ‘urban’/the mainstream indie/the jazz album etc).

It’s just shameful that they ignore people like Richard Dawson, Kelly-Lee Owens, Jane Weaver etc.

#94

ha yeah classic ‘the rest are shit’ response, i doubt anyone on here’s given it a listen

i don’t love it but it’s got some bangers on it, that’s for sure. probably my favourite of the lot at least.

#95

I don’t know, I think some of the recent winners have been pretty good. Not like we get a Klaxons every year winning

#96

Could you honestly say that you would be excited about any of the records on this year’s list winning?

#97

Maybe they should rethink this whole thing and make it for debuts only. And maybe none of this the label pays to nominate. And maybe I should decide the shortlist. Wishful thinking, I know.

But Ed fucking Sheeran…

#98

Where the fuck is slap bass hunks?

#99

Can’t imagine ed sheeran will win as they don’t tend to give it to urban acts 2 years in a row

#100

Er…did I say I liked this year’s shortlist much?

And Stormzy’s album is pretty great
