Don’t they normally announce the nominees in July? Anybody heard anything?
Should be out next week, it’s been between the 21st and 27th the last few.
You’d think so but there’s nothing on their social media (it’s all “nominated album x came out y years ago today”) or a date on their website bar the 2024 qualifying dates in the About section. But if the Mercury had been quietly dropped we’d surely have heard about it by now.
Expecting two jazz albums this year now the duck has been broken, from:
- Yussuf Dayes
- Fergus McCreadie
- Matthew Halsall
- Ill Considered
- Jasmine Myra
- Alabaster dePlume
- Amanda Whiting
- Shabaka
- Bex Burch
- Nubiyan Twist
- Get the Blessing
- Alina Bzhezhinska & Tony Kofi
- Blue Lab Beats
And then on the token non-jazz albums, would welcome nods for:
- Nia Archives
- Charli XCX
- Unknown T
- Hannah Diamond
- Kneecap
- Clara La San
- Beth Gibbons
- Sega Bodega
- James Blake
- Clarissa Connelly
- English Teacher
- The Last Dinner Party
- Fabiana Palladino
- Loraine James
- Drahla
- µ-Ziq
- Cleo Sol (either or)
- Yard Act
- Richard Hawley
- Nadine Shah
- Tirzah
- Marika Hackman
- Arab Strap
- The Chemical Brothers
- King Creosote
- Ibibio Sound Machine
- Fat White Family
- Sam Lee
Good lists!
I’d like to see Corinne Bailey Rae nominated (if she’s entered).
Not heard any albums by black London based artists so can’t pick a winner, but expect Idles, Charli, Last Dinner Party and Bru-C to feature. Think Bru-C would be a good winner.
Would be good if they got over their prejudice against heavy rock/metal. Though tbf don’t know how many albums from those genres would be submitted.
If whatever Idles released beats Charli we should abandon music forever.
I’d be really happy if Nia Archives got nominated or won
Why?
Mainly just cause I don’t like em
Fair. It’s their best album but wouldn’t be my pick
No chance at all Idles are winning, even if they’re nominated (which I doubt)
Should think Charli, Nia, English Teacher and TLDP are a shoo-in, beyond that I’m not entirely sure. AG Cook, possibly. King Hannah might be an medium-to-long nomination bet. Would love Corinne to get a nod but albums released that far back in the nominations period really have to have a huge long tail to get a look-in.
They don’t usually go so route one when picking a winner but kinda wonder if they’ll go for Charli this year. Tbf although it doesn’t need any more exposure as a documentation of the times and just really great album it would be a worthy winner.
TLDP and English Teacher nailed on as the fairly big indie band debut album nods that there’s always a couple of. Would love TLDP to win for the reaction on here tbh. Yard Act should get one for a much better second album, but it not being debut may mean they don’t.
Mount Kimbie and Bill Ryder-Jones maybe? Dunno if either are on labels that would be submitted.
This is a genuine question, who is the Mercury Prize sort of for? Like proper pop heads or general public really only pay attention to the Brit awards, anyone else with a deeper interest are already well aware of the acts on this shortlist because they’re pretty massive already just maybe not number 1 currently, and anyone who likes any sort of genre that isn’t pop or indie just isn’t serviced by it at all (with exception to extremely mainstream UK jazz, very occasionally). I just genuinely can’t think of a target audience.
Is it Guardian columnists specifically?
Hope I win it this year
Are you roping in hip hop in with pop? If so I’d broadly agree. There’s only been 2 indie winners in the last ten years though
I bet Kneecap get a nom.
I Hope Beth Gibbons & Arab Strap get nominated.
Don’t think they’d want the negative publicity from certain quarters for nominating Kneecap, but moreover it doesn’t feel like the album hit critically or got the talk in the way people were expecting it to, the peak of their hype seemed to be right at the start of the campaign with Better Way To Live and the Sundance award win.
