Today we travel back to the second Mercury Prize in 1993
The award was won by Suede for their self titled album.
But who should get 2nd place?

Absolutely fucking ridiculous nomination. Think this is the Tom Waits version? Wild that they allowed it to be nominated since the original came out in 1975 and the composition itself had been knocking about for a few years before that. Was British and Irish music really that bereft of choice in 1993?

Stan Tracey is the only one I’ve listened to lol, so that by default

an all-time fav jazz track for me, those horns are addictive

The Auteurs album is one of my all-time faves. My other votes are going to PJ and The Stereo MCs (it’s a good album!)

Trying to think what else could be on the list (Mercury Prize goes from September to September so it’s not just 1993 albums): Slowdive - Souvlaki, Verve - A Storm In Heaven and Boo Radleys - Giant Steps are three that spring to mind although that last one may have been released too late

feels like a fairly big omission but as I was zero years old at the time, can’t particularly comment on its impact at the time.

Boo Radleys, Seefeel, Stereolab, Saint Etienne, Slowdive and the God Machine (if they count) all had good to great albums out in '93 too. Appreciate not all of them may have had enough of an impact for a MP nomination, but even so you would have thought the Boo Radleys and Saint Etienne would have at least had a shout. List is bonkers.

Also the first Suede is decent and everything, but Rid of Me is so much better than anything else there it’s not even funny
