Welcome to the 4th instalment of threads where we look at a particular year of the mercury music prize. A prize for the best British and Irish album of the year.

Today we go way back to 1995. In 1995 the award was won by Portishead - Dummy but if you could award second place who would you give it to?

You can vote for up to 3 albums from this strong list…

  • Guy Barker - Into the Blue
  • The Boo Radleys - Wake up
  • Elastica - Elastica
  • PJ Harvey - To Bring you my love
  • Leftfield - Leftism
  • James MacMillan - Seven last words from the cross
  • Van Morrison - Days like this
  • Oasis - Definitely maybe
  • Supergrass - I should Coco
  • Tricky - Maxinquaye

Well, Maxinquaye is one of the best British albums of all time. So that.

Boo Radleys just for how much I love Giant Steps and how underrated it is

To Bring You My Love because it’s maybe her second best album, which is saying something

some of these albums should have come out in 2017, they’d have cleaned up

Wake Up was maybe the second or third album I ever bought. I think it gets overlooked because of the first track but it still stands up. Find The Answer Within is a gem.

I’m expecting PJH to win, but Tricky’s Maxinquaye is a stone cold classic.

If I could there are at least 5 albums on this list I would vote for!

Never heard of James McMillan or Guy Barker to be honest. To Bring You My Love is easily my fave PJ Harvey album and one of my favourites by anyone, incredible songs and atmosphere.

I’ve gone PJ, Supergrass and Oasis

I went for the three albums I hammered the shit out of at that time:

Supergrass
Leftfield
PJ Harvey

(I also hammered the shit out of Elastica, Tricky and Oasis just not to the same degree)

Feels awful to leave out PJ and Leftfield but I have to be honest with myself and go with the three I’m more likely to stick on.

Elastica
Supergrass
Tricky

PJ, Tricky and Leftfield for me. To Bring You My Love is my favourite PJ record, and though I think the judges got it right this year, it would seriously rival Dummy for overall best on the list, so hoping that it wins second place. May have listened more to Elastica, Supergrass and Oasis than Tricky and Leftfield at the time, but I had to go with what I would be most likely to listen to now.

What a contrast to the shitshow that was the 2017 list though

For some reason my vote isn’t registering, but for what it’s worth I would vote for

Tricky
Elastica
PJ Harvey

Must be one of the strongest shortlists ever (and the winner is great too).
