Fucking hell, just played that over headphones on a crowded train. Think I’m going to get sectioned when I arrive in London
Almost accidentally played it out to a room full of people celebrating their relatives’ graduation ceremony
Sometimes (albeit rarely) a band takes an idea from another artist wholesale (in this case, Suicide’s Cheree) and they not only surpass the original, they transcend everything said inspirational artist ever produced. This is one such occasion
Now that i think about it, the imperial phases of three of my favourite bands (Spiritualized, Pulp & Stereolab) all feature Farfisas as one of the most prominent instruments. I love that sound sooooo much

I’ll probably run song and album polls on the same day from next week because, from here on in, we’re leading with a studio album each week and including mini-albums and comps as extras.
Mars Audiac Quintet
Released in August 1994 on Duophonic, Stereolab’s third album saw a shift towards retro-futuristic pop, although Tim, Laetitia and the gang hadn’t turned their back on kosmische music completely. Talking of pop, Mars Audiac Quintet includes UK top 45 smash hit single Ping Pong as well as Wow and Flutter.
According to the liner notes, Katharine Gifford was part of the Groop at this point and Sean O’Hagan ‘featured’, but then I guess he was very busy with The High Llamas.
Could this be the only album in the club that both @paulo and @JaguarPirate like?
My entry point to Stereolab. I remember in Summer 1995 NME had asked a bunch of bands to make summer mix tapes, and Martin Carr from the Boo Radleys, and someone else (whose name has been lost to the mists of time) both included Ping Pong, so I thought I should check them out. The rest is history.
Have probably heard this once, maybe my least listened to Stereolab album. Looking forward to diving in.

This was the first Stereolab album I was waiting for and was basically hoping for more Transient. First impressions back then… smooth, shiny production, overlong, a bit samey, Ping Pong is incredible.
Impressions now… a lovely sound world of its own, very Star Trek in places, enthralling, comforting, underrated, Nihilist Assault Group is phenomenal.
Stayed up waaaay too late last night with many beers and the extended reissue version of this. Loved every fucking minute of it. Even the demos. My ‘favourite’ Stereolab changes every so often but always comes back to this album.
depending on the day, Transient…, Mars Audiac Quintet or Emperor Tomato Ketchup can all be my favourite Stereolab album. I thought MAQ was the height of the groop’s pop phase, albeit pop à la Stereolab, so pretty weird. Wow and Flutter and Ping Pong are such amazing singles, three minute bursts of delight.
The 7 minute version on Oscillons from the Anti Sun is awesome
Am travelling so will try to elaborate further, but MAQ is by far my favourite Stereolab studio album - it combines the best of all the worlds they explored. This song is so Neu! yet so Stereolab at the same time, it’s perfect
It’s grown on me so much. Maybe their first album with groove? …the basslines on Wow and Flutter, Nihilist Assault Group and Outer Accelerator, the 60s pop vibes of Ping Pong.
Definitely the album that starts to show the side of Stereolab I like the most. Not completely there, Emperor Tomato Ketchup is the one where it all clicked for me, but still a very good album.
Brilliant. That’s made me appreciate the song all the more ![]()
