Metronomic Underground: The Stereolab Listening Club - Solo albums, side projects and Stereolab-adjacent albums - post 522

Didn’t Mars Audiac Quintet come out before Refried Ectoplasm? Or are we doing Refried Ectoplasm first because it’s a compilation of material that was originally released before Mars Audiac Quintet?

Yay, peak Stereolab time!

The one-two of ‘Revox’ into ‘French Disko’ is fucking phenomenal. What a band.

I bloody love Refried Ectoplasm and lie to myself that’s a proper studio album. Because it came out after both Mars Audiac Quintet and Music for Amorphous Body Study Center, it was pretty obvious that the Groop had moved on from their heavy guitar/organ/motorik style and this felt like one last hurrah.

One of my favourite things about the RE tunes is the confidence and swagger, in contrast with the Switched On/Peng! period. They sound like they’re having fun and some of these tunes go hard.

It’s been great listening back this week. French Disko, Lo Boob Oscillator and John Cage Bubblegum were always great but Revox is fab (love Mary’s wordless vocals here just like on JCB)… Tempter is very Suicide, sort of motorik-without-guitars, with amazing drums to finish. Sadistic has this vocal melody that won’t leave my head and Animal or Vegetable, which I hated when I was younger, sounds amazing after listening to Faust.

Listening to this made me want to listen to Faust and Neu again.

Get me back to my krautrock era!!

Motorik is my musical kryptonite

God i love this album so much

Better thoughts later, but LBO, Revox and Tempter are up there in the pantheon of Stereolab masterpieces. Most of it is, TBH
