Metronomic Underground: The Stereolab Listening Club - Solo albums, side projects and Stereolab-adjacent albums - post 522

Actually from looking up a live version that might just be Laetitia singing a bit more forcefully through some fuzz, I thought she only came in for the chorus

Still though

Ah, only love for Tone Burst from me so far. Would have gone for Jenny O, but 18 mins is too long for any song. Also nearly went for I’m Going Out Of My Way and Crest.

Amazed to say that even after listening to Stereolab for over 30 years this was an EP that I’d somehow missed and Adult Orientated has now become a top 10 track of theirs for me.

Surprising - and refreshing - thing about the LC so far is that there have been some very different favourites (apart from last week, sort of). Doubly strange given that we are pretty much all the same personality on the prep-nerd-jock-goth scale.

Analogue Rock and Tone Burst are the least great ones for me. TB is some wonderful chaos by the end but the production and Laetitia’s vocal melody (near the bottom of her range) kind of kill it.
Analogue has a dark tone to it and I’m never ready after Jenny.

The production on the single version of Jenny is better but I love the absolute fuckery of repeating sections of repetition, especially as it is maybe the most obvious lift from Neu! of all their tunes. The expanded edition gives us another 4 versions. The gall! Love it.

It’s still Crest vs. Pack Yr Romantic Mind for 2nd place…hmmm

Really satisfying when the bass goes really high on Crest and then drops back down into the low end

Best thing anyone can do on a bass, and that includes an octave slide.

Afraid I’ve dragged the average down a bit with my mediocre score for Transient… It’s my least favourite so far, can’t quite put my finger on why. Other than Jenny Ondioline, it just kinda passes me by.

Ban request

It’s my least favourite so far too, but it’s still great! Gave it a 7.

I do love Transient… but there is something kinda dense and monolithic and almost overbearing or suffocating about the sound that means I sometimes find it hard to listen to. Their preceding releases have a lighter touch, which I appreciate

I know what you mean. Sometimes the dense sound is a bit suffocating (Tone Burst) but mostly I find it more exhilarating (especially Crest and the end of Golden Ball). But then Pack Yr Romantic Mind is like a ray of light and Pause is really calming. Apart from the numbers station broadcast!

It’s by far the best we’ve had so far IMO. And after this, we get to the best three album run in their discography :raised_hands:

Refried Ectoplasm (Switched On Volume 2)

It’s Lo Boobs time.

Refried Ectoplasm collects singles, songs from split singles/compilations and a couple of unreleased tracks, from July 1992 to November 1993 - from just after Peng! to just after Transient… Yeah, it’s a bit of an indulgence to make this our album of the week but there are some major tunes here. (Every week after this will focus on a studio album.) It came out in July 1995.
