Was that the Dos Ojos cenotes? We swam in there, and went snorkelling into bat caves. wonderful stuff.

@the_ravens oh crap maybe i dont want to go
i don’t like bed bugs or tarantulas!

Depending on how much driving you want to do, The Calakmul ruins in the south of the Campeche region near the Guatemala boarder are fantastic. It does take a while to get to them, as the last hour plus of driving is down a heavily potholed road through rain forest. There were lots of spider monkeys around we could hear howler monkeys, although we never managed to find them. They were so much more worth visiting than Chichen Itza, which even at 9am was packed with tourists and countless little stands selling souvenirs. You can climb the pyramids in Calakmul too, which offers views of, um, tops of trees

Did you go to Palenque? That (or maybe Monte Alban near Oaxaca) were my favourite sites I think.

I didn’t see any tarantulas and if I’d not been a dick I’d have avoided the bedbugs! It’s so beautiful there, don’t let minibeasts put you off

No, we decided that would be a bit too much of a drive out of the way, given the other things we wanted to do, including not driving a 10 hour round trip out of our way. we were disappointed to miss out on Palenque though.

Damn! i want to go back to Mexico.

Possibly! It was ten years ago. Just having a trawl through old photos to see if I could find any clues but I’m not really sure. Looked like this and was great fun.
