A thread for seeking help with Microsoft Office (or similar software).

In this table of contents β€œData” and one other heading have the page number straight after instead of having a dotted line to the right hand side of the page. How can I fix this?

I would add it manually but i am not great at word, is there a template for content pages that can automatically do it?

Oh, it is the automatic table of contents so it should doing it without me changing anything. Can type in some extra dots, but there should be a fix of some kind.

I’ve never seen that before. I’d probably try the turn it off and on again approach, ie turn the β€œdata” heading into β€˜normal’ text, update the contents to get rid of it, then turn it into a heading again and update the contents again?

Deleted the headings altogether, readded then and still not putting lines in. Very confusing :face_with_spiral_eyes:

What does it look like if you turn on the…thing that shows you where all the formatting and breaks are?

Dunno what the thing is called, looks like a backwards β€˜P’

My guess is there’s something funky that’s crept in to those lines somewhere, although I do quite a lot of contents tables and have never seen that. Word is horrendously buggy though.

I would try:
Delete and then readd the contents table
Rename the data section to something else and then update the contents table, and then change it back and update again
Copy a few sections into a new document and see if it does it there
Change the style of contents table and see if it does it on all of them

This is just brainstorming guesses, I’ve never seen it do that before. If you solve it it would be useful to know how in case it does happen to me!

Oh this might help

Perfect - thank you! Strange that such an issue wouldn’t be sorted.

Oh wait, it’s not working. I don’t have any of the things they have that are incorrect. Tried the steps anyway but no different. What a headache.

I’ve just given in and added unnecessary words so it likes the length. Silly.

Working on a reasonably simple Word document and every time I right click on a table it takes around 10 seconds to show the menu. Very annoying as I always tab in an extra row which I then need to remove. Word is a big old piece of junk isn’t it.
