Ditto, thanks for listening and commenting, good stuff.
No heading out tonight.
Feel free though if anyone else wants to host one, etc…
I was busy last weekend but am around tonight so might join you. Never heard of the album or band before so excited to listen to something brand new to me.
Enjoying that bass on this opening track with the violins coming in over the top. Was not expecting the change up after the second verse, already sounding very cool.
I’m liking the use of the violin too, give it some nice depth to the arrangement.
Getting a little Nick Cave & The Badseeds off of this second track. Really liking the switch up between the abrasive sax and smoother violin on this.
Loving this second track, the build up and layering of the sound is ace as it builds to the end.
The dynamic between that unrelenting bass line & driving drums and the delicate piano flourishes is great, really feel that this track is bubbling under and threatening to blow at some point.
The use of violin on these first few tracks has been really stand out to me so far, adding so much atmosphere and emotional tension. Really great.
I wasn’t so sure on this song when it first started but the buildup to this middle section is great, and there’s that solo mournful violin. There’s so much drama and emotion in the music in this I am not really having a chance to pick up on any of the lyrics.
Evening, just got back in but going to give this a listen, albeit about 20 minutes behind. Not familiar with it at all.
The guitar sound is great on this track. There is definite, and distinct sound across all the tracks so far but there is also a lot of variety in how that sound is being applied.
This is almost upbeat compared to the earlier tracks, the most straight forward song arrangement so far, still sounding really good though.
Song feels like it’s building to something, getting that apocalyptical vibe again after the last track. Feels like something big and ominous is just around the corner…
The arrangements are so good here, minimalist but working so well together, definitely feeling like the songs on here are greater than the sum of their parts.
Also when that bass came in…chefs kiss!
Last track disappeared before it got going. I wanted more.
This was a great choice @AttackDuck I love discovering new music through these listening parties and this didn’t disappoint. Another album to add to my list of ones I need to go out an buy. Thanks for hosting too.
Well done on the hosting @AttackDuck . Enjoyed reading through all the comments as I was listening. An interesting choice. I can’t fully place my thoughts on it to be honest. At times it threatened to be something I thought I wouldn’t get on with, but it would generally then draw me back in with stuff I enjoyed, often inventive or evocative. Happy I gave it a listen, so thanks for this.
Only other thoughts…
The Last Dictator 2 reminded me of Theme from Turnpike by Deus… and, well done to you both for being mature during the couple of moments in Last Dictator 1 where the lyrics take a pause, then go ‘Dick, Dick, Dick’ (I think Dick is a character in the song looking at the lyrics now).
The album everyone loves but no one actually listens too apparently.
So, Saturday, 23rd July, 9pm.
Nirvana - Nevermind.
All welcome.
Perfectly coinciding with this thread too.
