Somethingās amiss. The league say he signed a new contract in the summer yet the club never announced it. Apparently he and the club have a long-standing gentlemanās agreement to let him re-sign for Independiente in 2019. Iād have no problem with that but heās the best striker in England, probably the best out-and-out forward in the world after Suarez and heās a Ā£60m+ player, would be a Ā£100m player if he played for Spurs or a club who haggleā¦so itās a bit batshit.
Think whatās happened is whilst heās always seemed perfectly happy at the club (weirdly so in fact when heād walk into any team in the world bar Barca) the club have gone against his wishes and in effect activated their option of an extension, suggesting theyād either keep him or sell rather than let him walk away for nowt in three years time, when heād be 31.
Of late heās made some pretty vague comments about various things. He told the press about Guardiola banning phones at the training ground, he then made some pretty defeatist comments ahead of the Barca game. Itās hard to really say whether he was dropped for Barca or not when we know heās recently aggrivated an injury. Not playing him for that game in the hope of him being fit for important league games and winnable European ties makes sense to me.
Best guess is his nose has been put out of joint by the contract thing and having to train too hard. Heās a notoriously shite trainer. At the same time it would be a shame if we upset and then binned off such a great player and cult hero over trivial matters, whether they be football or money-related.
This post has ended up far, far too long.
